I prefer Shell when I have a choice. Years ago when I had a 2003 Tiburon, I tried a few different brands on a long trip, and Shell seemed to get slightly better fuel efficiency. That bit stuck with me. For a long time, I had a Shell card, so I could only use it at Shell stations. Now I just fill up with that brand unless there's not one nearby.

Have been running Shell VPower pretty much exclusively for several months and while it certainly ran smoother than running 87 of any brand, I did notice I logged (via OBD) more intermittent misfires. Switched to Citgo or BP premium (93 where I live) and no misfires logged and the truck is running really well. While VPower is often touted as the best additives aside from Techron, I suspect those additives may not work so well with the AC as my intermittent misfires always occurred under low load situations when it was likely in atkinson mode.

Regardless of any naysayers, MY truck definitely runs better on premium vs. regular no matter the brand but I always use Top Tier - BP, Citgo, etc., from well-maintained stations with high volumes of traffic. And since I use premium I'm also picky about which stations I purchase from and will often pay a few more pennies on the gallon to fuel in locales with high concentrations of luxury vehicles that require premium to reduce the chances of getting old gas where the ethanol content = water content of old gas.

I use Shell. I usually run 87. Run it down to 1/2 then put 91 or 93 into it. Then back 87.

If you question the quality of a gas brand, do some homework, and at least be bcc sure to use avTOP TIER gasoline, as opposed to.a non TOP TIER gasoline.
TOP TIER icludes all the biggies you're used to.seeing including chevron, costco....

I have been using regular unleaded 87 from Kroger gas station. Don’t know their supplier for gas since I bought my truck back in November 2016.
My truck sits at 21,450 miles and haven’t had any issues with rough idling, engine sputtering, or any of those issues.

After my transmission reflash my truck has been running smoothly with the cheap gas I put in it.

    Yes, fuel matters.

    • Buy quality “Top Tier” fuel and you will get better mileage and save on repairs.
    • “Top Tier” gas is available from branded stations like Chevron, Shell, Texaco, Exxon, or Mobil. A full list is available here.
    • Don’t buy unbranded fuels from AM/PM, Space Age, Rocket, Safeway or any other unbranded or Ma-and-Pa outlets.
    • Use fuel with the octane rating that your vehicle manufacture recommendations.
Folks, guys.... Do at least a little research.

I run 93 non-ethanol gas at 3.00/gal and get 21-22 mpg. Also use Amsoil oil and truck runs like a dream.

Try to keep at least a half tank of fuel your fuel pump is cooled by the gas in your tank

I've driven 10,000 miles since September. Taco doesn't care what I feed it IMHO.

It's not about miles per gallon, its about smiles per gallon.

    I said it, fight me.

Is there a proven reason people use higher octane fuel when towing?

I agree, here in Canada Costco Gasoline is listed as a Top Tier Gasoline, and is on the Web Site you quote in your post.

What is surprised me was when the Service Department at my Dealership said the gas I was using (Costco since day 1) had fouled the injectors.

I did my research, Costco has a label on their pumps stating they are Tier 1so I am using them.

Interestingly I did not switch from Chevron to Costco until they had the Top Tier labeling on their pumps.

Going to call Costco Headquarters next week to see what they have to say.
