I don't want to argue on the OP's thread any more but I'll leave you with this:



If the pink torque curve is stock, and the light green is tuned, I don't think you can say OV hasn't added torque at a given RPM (especially from 2000-3000, in there the peak difference is more than 30 lb/ft). If you re-gear, your torque curve will theoretically look the same as stock, except as you said you get a greater multiplication effect - the same pattern, but more output from the axles across the whole curve. I'm NOT disagreeing with you on that. With OV though, you do in fact get more torque at all rpms except for right at ~3600. I have no idea how this will translate when at altitude, other than to say the results would be lower across the board. I can tell you that on the highway with stock gears/tire size, I can most certainly feel that difference from 2000 - 3000. Would it be enough to satisfy OP's complaint WRT power in her situation? I honestly can't say. But to me it's worth a try. That's all.

 

I thought i read the OVT has to be reflashed periodically , because the truck wants to relearn OEM tune is that true?

 

you make a good point about reverse, i hadn't thought about that in the context of this thread. It's way too high stock.

 

OV has apparently found the cause and has neutered that. We'll have to see after peeps get a bunch of miles on the tune though..

BTW that is MOSTLY an A/T annoyance, but I can tell you that my throttle response started to get numb after a few thousand km after flash of the previous M/T tune. I flashed it again to see if my hypothesis was correct - it was, the throttle response came back immediately.

 

Its good that you mentioned warranty issues with resetting OEM tuning. Yes, if your engine breaks, they could and have voided it due to reflashing the tuning settings. I have the same problem uou have with an AT- use an RTT and pull a trailer too. I just decided to live with it until the warranty times out, im not willing to void it by turbo or supercharging it, or retuning it - both of which I would like to do also.

 

Do you know of someone who got "caught" running OVtune in particular? I agree that Toyota could and would void warranty IF they found out.

 

Theres a thread somewhere here on TW where someone mentioned that the computer showed a retune event on the codes and it raised issues with Edit: the dealer. I will try to find it.

If memory serves me right, it showed a retune occured even though it was reset to normal OEM configuration.

Yup. Drove the truck less than 3k on stock wheels and tires before I started cutting and chopping. Was on 33’s for 8 months before going to 35’s. Plan on cutting the front suspension out hopefully by the end of 2018 to go solid axle, 40’s, and 5.29’s on 1 ton superduty axles.

 

Problem is Toyota test drove these trucks at sea Level. I test drove a 3rd gen up 170 the other day and it had a hard time making it up Morrison off i70. I have a 2nd gen with big tires a topper all my camping and snowboarding gear and it mobs up twice as easy. You’d think on a new truck it’d run better but not in Colorado.... crazy you have to regear a new truck so it can hold a little load going uphill. You won’t have that problem with the second gen. There’s a reason they put the 4.0 back in the 4Runner...

 

So! An update. The tune looks like a great option, I’m going to order it when it’s back in stock, I dial-booted my Mac so I can instill it off of there.
I will wait on the regear until I get my lift/ bigger tires.

However!! I got my wish for 20-30Hp/torque boost! I changed the intake to a bigger one, and added a 7stage filter. Combined with the downpipe that I already had, I would argue that I am at least seeing a 20 HP boost. I am also getting better gas mileage!! Also, shifting (at altitude) is much better...a little smoother. torque is better, gosh, for a little bit of work its a fantastic change.
