Okay, thanks for adding the hyperlink on the information in regards to "Top Tier". I was confused at what the label was or if you really were calling it a "Better" or "Upper Tier Gas". I will try and respond as best as possible.

    1. Some fuel terminals (Magellan, Colonial) will put a small additive in the fuel as it is being blended. There is nothing you can do about that. It is to prolong the life span of the fuel or to meet EPA Standards. It is marginal.

    2. The reference of "Top Tier" that you are speaking of is a chemical detergent that is being placed in the fuel to make it "greener", "cleaner", "less corrosive" to the engine. Murphy USA does NOT put this detergent in their fuel. This is why you don't see Murphy on that list. Now this isn't to say that some of their fuel doesn't have it, but they don't validate it. This detergent is likely blended in at the terminal in the huge tanks that you see.

    3. Those tanks that you see at Fuel Terminal's hold hundreds of thousands of gallons of gasoline.

    4. All those companies you see on that list, and several that aren't all trade, sell, and buy fuel from each other. As well as all those companies on the Top Tier List, all get their fuel from those 2 Terminal/Piplelines. There are a few smaller piplelines but those are the majority.

    5. As of now, there isn't any scientifically backed data that says all the additives and detergents hinder your engine or make it work better.

Unless there is a button selection at the pump for fuel additive, there is nothing at the store that puts the additive in your fuel. It will happen at the terminal. The reason that you may see a fuel drop from MPG or performance can be several different things. Sometimes that 87e10 that you put in your truck, could have a touch of 91e10 on it by accident. It could also accidentally have a touch more than 10% ethanol. Ethanol attracts water, so that fuel may have some condensation attracted to it that hurts the performance of your engine.

The biggest change that you can see will be from an 87e0 which is what is called a straight 87 or 87 non-ethanol. They also have this in a 91e0. It is pricier because it doesn't have ethanol. You would just have to see how and what you are willing to pay for on performance and mpg.

No problem. I'm not here to talk anyone out of where they prefer to purchase their gasoline. I had that same misconception when I started in that industry, because growing up you always heard things like "Don't get gas from their they have cheap gas". It is all the same gasoline. There just happens to be several variables that can affect the performance of your fuel. Buy from where you like, but again Phillips fuel isn't superior to BP or Costco or vice versa. Performance wise it is all the same fuel, other than those detergents for "cleaner fuel" from that Top Tier website. If the government didn't have the huge subsidies on corn for Ethanol production, we likely would not have that in our fuel now.

I managed a small convenience store for almost 19 years, it isn't the gas. I ran off brand gas most of the time I was there. In my early years there, we were branded. The company I worked for was a Chevron Jobber, but we could make .10 cents more on gas going unbranded. My Civic had over 70,000 miles when I sold it, my old Toy 274,000, no injector issues, I did throw a bottle of Techron in in maybe once a year or two years. The pumps in tanks should be set about six inches off the bottom of the tank. I "stuck" the tanks every day and checked for water at least once a week.

Here is an easy fix for anyone that runs into the same issue that 8102
I hate to see anyone screwed over when it comes to these situations. Here is the fastest way of proof for bad gas. If you ever and I mean ever have a potential for bad gas and you get the run around from the mechanic like 8102 had, there will be more proof than 1 vehicle. Most stores sell more than 50 gallons an hour, especially large stores can sell 12K gallons of fuel an hour. If you get told you have bad gas, guess what there will be other vehicles that have the same issues. Yours will not be the only one.

I only use Costco cause I live near one. It is Kenan gas and supplied to lots of other stations. I bet you got a faulty injector and like most techs they told you a story so you wouldn't question the quality of the vehicle.

I have used Shell 91 in my 2016 BMW R1200gs with great performance.....used it also in my Lexus GS-350 and wife’s ES350 for the since 1995...Now in my truck, I used Shell 87 and Costco 87...No hesitations whatsoever in truck....on trips i use Shell 87.....in town i use Costco and sometimes Chevron 87.....20k on Tacoma.....140k on GS-350 and 70k on ES-350

When going on long trip on the R1200gs, I used Shell when I can and whatever when I am in the middle of BFE knowing one tank won’t be bad.....

No longer necessary with modern pumps as they literally pump the fuel right over their armature and internals, as long as your engine is running your pump has enough fuel to be cool.

I live in Hawaii, and we only have two refineries, Tesoro and Chevron, I was told that it doesn't matter here where we put gas since we only have two refineries. The gas stations we have here are Tesoro, Shell, Chevron, Texaco, Aloha Gas, Safeway Gas, Costco Gas, Safeway Gas, Freedom. So if we only have two refineries, does this mean even if I go to Shell, it's most likely Tesoro or Chevron fuel that I'm pumping into my vehicle?

All the fuel being produced at a refinery, is "owned" by that refinery owner which will usually be BP, Conoco, Shell, and so on. The companies you mentioned, purchase that bulk from the refinery up to several tens of thousands of gallons. The only change will be if that store brand "BP, Phillips (Conocco), Costco, Sams, etc." cares to put a detergent in their fuel or an additive.

I use Shell Bronze. I wanted to stick to a brand that was available almost anywhere in Canada and the odd trip to US.
I used to try and use Petro Canada with my other vehicles they are hit and miss for locations, unless in a major center.

We have 2 main gas lines coming into our town of several million people. ALL Gas stations pull their gas from the 2 lines, what makes them different is the additives they add. So the GAS is the same, its just what they add that makes them different.

I have a friend that delivers Gas here and he does it for several different company’s. He pulls up to the main tanks and fills up and then goes to the company’s that he is delivering for, adds the additives into the GAS. Then he delivers it. Calls his dispatch and finds out who is next.

There's no way where you get your gas from makes that much of a difference unless you get it from a dude in an alley with a gas can. I'm no mechanic but that sounds like a pretty complicated thing to just have such a distinct culprit from. I'm an IT person and I couldn't imagine being able to discern that much from that problem. I see it akin to blaming your computer's power supply getting fried on what electric company you get your power from. Come on.

That being said, I do get only premium but I get it from whatever is easiest. I'm not waiting in line at Costco for three hours to get gas at 5 cents less than anywhere else (for real, I don't know if it's just my area but damn, that line is never less than 5 cars deep). I swore that after putting premium in my last car (never saw anything but premium except for the free tank when I bought it) that I wouldn't do that again, but then I got my truck and have put nothing but premium in. I sold my other car with 65k on it so I don't know if it helped or not. This is mostly due to being in CO where 85 is low grade and 91 is high. Not putting in 85 and Sams and Costco both don't have mid grade here, so...

I use only 93 octane ethanol free gas from Conoco for $3.19/gal. Got 24.7 mpg on my last road trip. No one can tell me the ethanol gas makes no difference!
