There’s not much to it. Look at the new instructions that got posted and you’ll know everything you need. It’s seriously just download the utility, run it, select the tune to download. Very quick and easy.

I’m gonna say that’s unlikely. My gut tells me we’re another 3-5 days out.

a note about the valve timing.

With toyotas new implementation of Atkinson modes in their various vehicles, I did some investigation into other platforms to see how they implement the advance degrees on cars that get noticeably good gas mileage.

For example, the 5.0L GSE motor in the RC-F / LC500.

In this picture, you can see the 5.0L motor has a much wider window where "atkinson" mode is enabled with very low valve advance. This means the engine isn't going outside of it's efficiency window if you give it some throttle, or rev it to 3000 rpm. Anywhere other than moderate to high throttle you are still within the window of getting moderate to good efficiency.
For example the LC5000 weighs 4300+lbs and has a 5.0L v8 but can get 30+ MPG.

Now on the right you can see the "efficiency" window on the trucks v6. You get right off idle and a small section of the map under very light load (which is near impossible in this truck due to throttle demand to actually get it moving).
I believe that...or it is my opinion that Toyota tuned this area for efficiency to work well with the low RPM of 6th gear to get the "quoted" mpg numbers they advertise. Except the transmission tune completely messes that up because maintaining 6th gear at speed is so difficult.

So I have changed the valve timing to allow a wider range of area for "atkinson" like mode. This only very slightly changes the characteristics in response, but has made it possible to get considerably better MPG.
I have done extensive testing and logging and not once ever have I seen my dash MPG counter get anywhere near 19, or the 22 seen today.

The new focus on mpg though is not affecting the performance improvements and gains the MT guys are getting?

I will ecstatic if I can get over 17mpg in the city. My truck saw 16mpg for a short time while stock and has not seen over 14mpg since. For the last few months I have been getting around 12.5mpg per tank (calculated). This tune will make or break the decision to keep this thing!

No, however the focus is to make the truck efficient at highway speed, and very responsive in city driving but also maintaining some sort of acceptable MPG.

I like the truck but this mpg stock is a freaking joke.

19 city / 24 highway was probably obtained with a tacoma 2 door with no interior at 50mph downhill
