Rear passenger wheel locked

About 10 degrees out. Never engaged the parking brake but truck was parked for about 6 hours.

This is the 4th time this rear wheel locked. Took it to the dealership. They said it’s because I have an open differential and recommended I get better tires.

I’m at a loss for what to do. My truck is currently sitting in a ski area parking lot waiting to be towed on Tuesday. The wheel unlocks on dry, or non icy roads...

Dealer is completely full of shit. Most cars and trucks have open differentials. I would laugh in their face If they tried to tell me my tires were causing a wheel to lock up.

If it's been on for that 4 times it qualifies for lemon law in many states.

 

Take a Torch to the rear drums, least that will get you going. I always engage my emergency brake. I park on hills, plus I hate when I put it in park and the truck moves a little when I turn it off.

Saw a chevy Cobalt the other day dragging the passenger side tire down the road lol. It was one of those, well I could chase the guy on foot and yell for him to stop or eh fuck it..

 

That dealer is full of it..... find a new dealer!

Maybe. Pulled out from the store and was going like 15 mph while it was dragging. Really didn't make a noise and the road was super icy. Idk. Thought it was still funny. Its not just a Tacoma thing. Like I said. I would take the wheel off, torch it around the drum and start using the Ebrake to see if it stops.

 

Yeah definitely not just a Tacoma issue. My comment was the obligatory stab at Mike sweers for his defense of using drums. They work fine for me, no problems.

 

Driving with a locked rear tire can be really bad - back when I was a dumb lad, my old BMW 1600 would lock up one of its rears randomly when I tapped the brakes while driving on snow or ice, making the car do an uncontollable 180 and slide to a stop backwards. It happened one time in front of the sheriff when I was slowing down to make the main turn into town - he just laughed at me. Another time it happened was late one night after work at a ski area- I was racing a friend’s 4x4 Toyota down the empty snow covered road and I was doing well (I had snow tires), but then I tapped the brake and it spun around. All I could do was to try to steer it to stay on the road until it came to a stop. Pretty scarry!

I wouldnt mess with frozen brakes if the road is icy, that could be bad news!

 

I had the rear pass wheel lock on me on my last tacoma once. Had tow it to the dealer. When the tow truck driver took it off the flatbed it unlocked itself in the process. Making me look like I was crazy Took about an hour for them to find out what it was that was causing it. Turned out there is a rubber sleeve around the parking brake cable right when it goes into the drum. I would have a look and feel if the tension is the same on the parking brake cable as it goes into the drum. Not entirely sure if this could happen when you aren't using the parking brake though

 

The last time this happened this winter, I engaged the ebrake prior. Got on dry road, the wheel started rolling. Went to the dealership, they said I wasn’t getting traction on the ice and the wheel locked because the open differential was trying to compensate. No traction? How the fuck did I get to the mountain, on the same ice. Anyway.

No ebrake today, and it’s locked again. I’m sure once I get it towed off the ice and snow, it’ll unlock...

I’m at a loss because I go up maybe 20-40 times a year, sometimes with my kids. They’re not in a place to feel trapped on a mountain. Does this mean I can’t drive, the truck I bought to go to the mountains, to the mountains. This can’t be normal.

 

It's not. I'd call corporate and get something going with them. Seems like a safety issue.

 

This happened to me too!! Rear passenger would lock up, but reverse it would spin freely.
I thought it was my ebrake locking/ freezing up because we were camping in 10 degree snow weather in Bear. Used a blow torch on the drum brakes and that got it loose.

 

Make and post a YouTube video of you and your kids camping out in the cab of the truck waiting for a rescue off a cold mountain highway pass because your rear brakes are frozen- start talking with your kids about how they should eat you first to survive if you don't get rescued and the video will go viral- also try to get on the news with your story- Toyota Corporate will contact you directly with a fix soon afterwards...

Im sorry this is happening to you guys in the cold weather places- we’re not likely to have this issue in the southwest. Hope there’s a good fix for it, seems to happen lot.

 

This is what they told me.

 

That wont solve anything, A drum brake isn't exactly sealed. My 2nd gen did this sometimes, Low range and some throttle would break it free.
