3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

As you all are aware this TSB fix centers around the BD22 rear differential and at the moment is focused on selected 2016 and 2017 models. I'm not finding much info on the BD22, but logic strongly suggests the BD22 is most likely is used in the same selected 2018's as well since some of you are reporting the same conditions between 50-60 MPH.
I would like to believe it will eventually cover the the same selected 2018 models as well. However, it would be very helpful if those with more experience could add any more verification/conformation about the BD22 rear differential actually being used in the 2018 models. That info, if true, would server 2018 owners well when addressing any dealership for the same read differential whine/howl characteristics between 50-60 MPH but not being included in the current TSB.
Admittedly, the dealership would not accomplish the fix, but the owner would now be documented with factual information. Or, am I out in left field?

 

Sorry, the vibration was from my gas pedal not the break. No, i dont need to see a doctor, I don't have diabetes or any vascular disease. The vibration had me repositioning my foot on the gas pedal every couple minutes. Again it greatly improved when they switch out the first howling rear diff.

 

I had the TSB completed on my 17 Off Road DCSB last Thursday. Sad to say my howl is still there, although I think it is definitely quieter. If I feather the throttle around 55 MPH there is still a slight howl.

 

Thanks for posting the results, glad to hear it at least reduced the volume of the Howl.

 

Was it a wider mph range before? Or was it always just at 55mph? What did the dealer tell you after they found the howl was still there?

 

It is a wider range. Realistically more like 50 - 60, but I can’t produce the sound outside of those ranges. I had to drop my truck off and pick it up once completed. They didn’t mention anything other than “it’s completed”. It looks as if they test drove it based on the miles but I can’t be certain.

 

Is there anyone on this thread who has replaced the whole leaf pack? I know that Smitty99 reported that this noise went away after he installed his add-a-leaf. Just curious if what the effect is of upgrading the springs entirely.

 

I believe he said it was greatly reduced, but then it came back.

He's been banned for a while now so who knows what the long term effects were.

 

Just picked the truck up after having them do the TSB, and I have good and bad news:

The bad - the whine is still there.

The good - it’s quiet enough now that I can barely hear it with the radio off. Before the TSB I could hear it over the radio in most cases.

As long as it doesn’t get worse for some reason, I’m good with the results.

 

If you could give it a percentage in sound reduction how much would say it's been reduced by?

 

I would be okay with barely being able to hear it with the radio off. What mph range did yours howl at before the TSB?

 

I’m sure the results will vary for everyone, but it is a significant difference for me. I’d bet that someone who didn’t know what they were listening for wouldn’t notice it now.

If I had to throw a number out I’d say maybe 80 - 85%. It’s hard to say since I know exactly what to listen for.

 

Same here, I’m fine with it now. I could make it happen about anywhere from 50 - 60 mph when feathering the throttle. Around the 57ish mark seemed to be the loudest.

 

Can you still hear it through that entire range? Or is it just around 57mph when feathering post TSB?

 

Yeah right around that range is where I was trying to hold it and listen. I need to get a little more time on the highway to see if I still hear it through the full range.

 

Sounds good! Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to see how your howl compared to mine so I know what to expect when/if the TSB is done. Mine is quite loud from 61-53 so it sounds like I will still be able to hear it. Hoping my dealer will help me out on the price of the parts as my truck does not qualify for the TSB (2018). A man can dream at least haha

 

No worries! Honestly mine was loud, and it was just as bad, if not worse, after they replaced the diff. I’d try calling corporate if I were you and see if they’ll help you out, I had a good experience with them when they were trying to diagnose mine initially.

I was prepared to just live with it, as they convinced me it wasn’t going cause problems, but I’m glad they finally came up with somewhat of a solution.

 

Well you got me curious so I just went for a drive and I can only hear it at 56 - 57 mph, per the digital speedometer. Can’t hear it at any other speed, and it is super faint where I can hear it.

 

54 MPH is the sweet spot for the Howling in mine, very audible in the 50-60 range though.

 

Same for me -54 mph. Mine will run you out of the truck at that speed with the radio off and is audible with my stereo above 35. I was hoping the noise would be completely muted and hate to hear it is still audible because I’d bet my truck is among the “loud” ones.
