I was basically cruising around at 55mph on near flat roads/highways for about 50 miles. Had to go trout fishing.

Trip MPG was nearly 23.8 MPG. Based on my fuel logs (see link below), the in-dash fuel statistics usually report a number that is much lower than actual.

I seriously think people need to re-think their hatred of the Atkinson cycle. 23.8 MPG is close to what I got with my 2007 2.7 Tacoma. This engine has close 100 more HP and much heavier to push along.

I don't think anybody hates the engine. I know some people don't like the automatic transmission, but who hates the engine?

I had a 99 2wd that i sold after i bought my new one. It had the 2.4 and it was ruff on gas. 17 to 18 on highway just pokin around if i was lucky. New one does alot better which is odd cause its alot bigger and heavier. No complaints here

I'm less worried about the Atkinson cycle and more concerned about the two guys with Tacomas you left stranded on the side of the road.

The fuel economy is Good on the third gen, and it gets better after break-in. Maybe “impressive” is not the right word, but certainly close. My points of comparison aren’t maybe the best (2007 Ford Ranger 4WD and 2008 F350), but it makes both of those vehicles look like gas pigs. Why it matters for me, is not so much the cost of the gas, but the range I get out of a tank when travelling remote.

I think the major problem with fuel economy commentary on this forum is a lot of people are running E-rated tires, lifting, and upsizing the tires. Any truck will suffer from those things. Especially the E-rated tires.

2 years in, the engine offering is solid so far. CPS was a growing pain, and we have that guy with the AFE filter that let the dirt into his engine, but other than those things, how many truly failed 3.5s have been discussed on this forum?

Yesterday I went and saw my parents about 59 miles south of me (about 52 miles i-5, 3 miles stop and go and 4 miles country road) . I had a terrible head wind and snow most of the way down. I kept dropping down to 5th gear just to maintain 65mph. I had to put my foot to the floor a few times to pick some speed back up to get it back into 6th gear. Trip mpg said 20 on the dot when I got to their house.

The way back up in the afternoon the weather was good and wind was normal. I pulled into my apartment with a trip reading of 26.8mpg. I averaged 68-70mph on i-5. The 3.5 can get really good mpg when everything is right. I tank average around 20mpg no matter what. Short work commute kills fuel economy, but I am still happy with what I get!

Edit: This is all based on what the computer is telling me. Note: Overall tank average is usually within .2mpg of my hand calculations though.

47 miles on highway (little hill and no wind at all) and get 30 mpg. Truck is stock, keep speed around 60-65 mph. Gotta love 2.7l. I could not even get to 23mpg if I keep push it around 75-80.

I have no experience with e-rated tires on a Tacoma, and will avoid them if possible. I do have C-rated tires and by going to a larger wheel, I was able to keep my wheel/tire combined weight close to stock. I still lost 1-2 MPG in the change.

I had a carbureted Mazda B2600 4X4 that I put E-rated tires on back in the early 90’s. The tires were the same size as the p-rated I took off. The fuel consumption on that vehicle increased by about 30% with the heavier tires. I learned my lesson back then.
