Got my new FJ rims in yesterday and would like to paint the red TRD logo on the center caps to black. Not the whole center cap, just the logo. What kind of paint should I look for and where can I get it? What kind of prep work is needed? Clearcoat? I have no friggin clue on what to do to make it last.

Here's a pic (borrow from Oswego)...

Get blue painters tape and cover it. Then cut out the letters with an exacto knife.

My best guess is to use Black Krylon Fusion. Do about 3 coats. Then maybe 2 coats of clear.

Easier route is to go to office depot and buy one black permanent marker and apply. Lol

Let us know how it goes.

2 years down the road pokeng goes to sell these wheels:

Buyer: Hey I like that unique touch to the center caps! How did you do that?

Pokeng: I colored it in with a sharpie.

Buyer: *Hops in his truck and leaves*

Any problems in clear coating the entire center cap after painting the letters? I have the logo masked and the letters cut out. It was such a pain that I'd like to avoid doing it again. But I expect to have to pull the masking after the paint coats for some touching up to make sure I got all the red covered. I thought I could just clear coat over everything after that's done.

Honestly I don't know. I have never used clear. I would think I would make them more shiny and you might could see the difference.

Drat. Good point. Guess I'll mask it second time.

Yeah, trying to do it right. I haven't pulled the masking. Haven't even painted yet, just masked and letters cut out. The letters are recessed a bit and I can tell the red paint extends up the sides a bit. I've trimmed the masking as best I can, but I know the new paint line will need some cleaning and touch up before the clear coat. Damn, I'm anal.

I would not attempt to spray that man, if I were doing it I would get a pin-stripping brush and paint it with that. Then you can be much more detailed and wipe off anything you screw up as soon as you do it. Just my .02

Just do like two light coats. And two light clear coats. Should be enough.

Hiya Jay. Any idea where can one find a pin-stripping brush?

BTW, this is all your fault. :D I liked your setup so much I'm copying it, with a few minor tweaks, of course.

You can clear coat the entire cap. I did it to my center caps using a matte clear so it wouldn't be glossy.

Good deal buddy, as far as the brush. Any auto paint store should have it. All you would need is a pint of paint. The other place you could check is just about any art supply or craft store also. Good luck man, I am sure it will turn out fine. I have been thinking about painting mine the same way.
