What's a good tire that gives you the All-terrain/offroad look, but balanced better for more street

I'm looking for suggestions for that amazing BFG KO2 tire look, but not so aggressive that it creates more road noise (i know some is expected when upgrading from OEM stock tires) and a worse (bumpier) ride as this would be used for lots of street driving and highway commuting. I like the look on the TRD PRO rims...any suggestions/pictures? I'm new to this and this would be for a stock ride height...maybe lift later on in the future, but baby steps now. I know after a lift/spacers I would go a little bigger on the tire size, but suggestions for tire size for the 17" TRD PRO rims on a stock suspension. I don't want to rub, or roll my fender well. Is there any tire with less aggressive tread (if it even matters), if it doesn't disregard. I don't know much yet but do know that this forum has very valuable people and information beyond words. And I thank you all for it. Pictures win you more of my love.

 

Look into the Falken Wildpeaks AT3W there’s even a couple of threads floating around that is dedicated to those tires. They are a lot cheaper than BFG too and a lot say they like it more than BFG.

 

Make sure you get a standard load rated tire and not an LT. That'll save weight and make for a more similar to stock ride. The LT tires are much heavier and feel "bumpier".

Any suggestion for size on stock suspension for 17” and just for kicks 18” (thinking of powder coating my limited 18’s all black as an option as well), with or with spacers I just don’t want that honky tire sticking out look...

 

I reall like my Yokahama Geolander GO15's -- mine are 265/65/17's -- but I know they have them in 265/70/17 as well -- mine are P rated --not sure about the 65/70 's
Smoother riding and quieter than the OEM firestones that came on the truck

I recently got a set of Michelin LTX AT2's in stock size and couldn't be happier. Great for snow, quiet and reasonably compliant for highway/commuting, and they do well on the easy/moderate trails I've taken them on. Worth a look, OP.

 

If you're actually interested in street performance, this is the only answer. Obviously, it doesn't look as good as a KO2, but what you're asking for is impossible. Those looks come with a cost. I think the AT2s look good. Here's mine at the scrap yard the other day.

 

Take a look at weights for each tire. Also take in to consideration Standard Load versus C load or E load LT tires. You mentioned you will be doing a lot of highway miles. Heavier tires will hurt your MPG.

I had BFG KO2 E Load and they rode nice and quiet. They were 54lbs a piece and hurt my MPG.

I went with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 SL at 40lbs per tire. Regained my MPG.

Make sure you select what fits you the best.

Nitto Terra Grappler G2 for commuting on aftermarket wheels and Falken Wildpeak on my stock rims for offroading is my plan.

 

I love my nitto ridge grappplers. More aggressive and better off road than the KO2s since they're a hybrid tire ,but still does well on the street and super quiet for how aggressive it is.

 

I've heard good things about all the hybrid tires out there. Cooper ST Maxx, Nitto Grapplers, etc.

 

KO2s in C load are a nice combination of looking aggressive while still being good on road. That being said there are some issues...they are hard to balance and they get louder as you put miles on them even if well maintained/rotated regularly. I have them and like them but I'm definitely going with something different when the time comes. Not sure what though.

 

If you like Ko2s get them. They aren't loud at all. There is a local guy that has 275/70/17. I think they are E load, so a little stiff. I bet you could fit 34/10.5/17 Ko2's pretty easy too; they run embarrassingly small. I had that tire for a while, they were smooth as butter (but I was coming from an KM2s). They are in load D, so much more forgiving.

 

FWIW I'm running 245/75R16 General Grabber AT2's on my 17' DCSB OR, same height as the 265/70R16 factory street tires. They look almost identical to BFG AT KO2's, not quite as strong, but a lot lighter.

265/75r16 Nitto Terra Grappler. Great tire all around! Gotten over 200,000 miles on my last two sets. Plus as some more aggressive tires put on some miles towards the end their life they loose their intended aggressive look...these not so much. In the photo of the gray Tacoma there are around 90,000 miles on those Nittos and another 15,000 before I traded them in.

 

I wish they would make the new generation of terra grappler, the g2, for a 16 inch rim. I was ready to pull the trigger on that tire til I learned that.

 

good thread, I'm also interested in this answer as my stock tires will barely last the year, and I have SCS rims ready to go.

I want something that looks mean but doesn't cause my mileage to dip significantly..

 

As mentioned above, don't go to an LT tire if you're doing a significant amount of highway miles.

I went to a Cooper LT load rating E tire from stock tires and although I'm not getting flats on the trails anymore, these things DESTROYED my gas mileage. I was getting about 18 in town and up to 21-22 on the highway. Now I get 14-15 in town and not much better on the highway. Driving through WY to Jackson Hole this last weekend I was getting 12-13 MPG on the highway for a stretch. Granted I was going 80 and I likely had a headwind, but I think these things have impacted my MPGs way more than I initially realized. I think I'm going to switch back since the truck is my daily driver.
