Ugh. 2300 miles on my new truck and the check engine light is on. Oil is fine. Gas cap on tight. Appointment at dealer tomorrow...

It's a beautiful day for a motorcycle ride.

Good luck at the dealer - I hope you take it to somewhere other than Beaman. No good experiences have I had there...
Also not a bad idea to get you a bluetooth OBD2 scanner which you can get relatively cheap on Amazon (like Carista is what I use) and you can read the codes to your phone via an app so you'd know what threw the code before taking it in.

Can also go down to your local autozone/o'riellys and they will hook up to it free and tell ya the error messages if you wanna get a feel for the issue before you take it to the dealer.

Thanks guys. It's just the idea of it. It's brand new and under warranty, that's why I'm just taking it to the dealer. Cool Springs, by the way. Didn't buy a new truck to learn the error codes! Same crap with my latest Harley. Check engine light came on 6 different times. Error codes included the O2 sensor and both rear speakers. It doesn't even have rear speakers...

They aren’t recommending to do it so you can learn the codes, It’s so that you know what happened before the dealer molests your brand new truck. They can cause more issues than the original reason you brought it in. If you don’t check, you will never know. Hopefully the dealer isn’t shady abd they do you right.

You're in good hands down at Cool Springs. That's the only place I'll be buying from in the area moving forward...

    good luck!

I get what they're saying, and have every intention of stopping by the Autozone before I hit the dealer. Have learned plenty about different codes over the years with previous vehicles, just didn't expect to have the check engine light come on so soon on my new truck.

    And yes, stock air cleaner.

It may be something very simple like a loose gas cap or something - literally that will cause a CEL that has to be cleared manually or will go away after several drive cycles. If it's something severe you will generally go into a limp mode, otherwise just get it in and they can take a look.

I feel you frustration - nothing sucks more than being so excited about a brand new truck you purchased with reliability in mind - b/c it's a TOYOTA TACOMA for crying out loud, and they are legendary for those same reasons.

That said, I was in for a rude awakening when my CKP sensor was failing and the dealership told me nothing was wrong despite the poor driveability, rough idling, intermittent loss of power, and high misfire counts. I was in for a rude awakening when my AT shifted extremely rough and was found (after I escalated multiple times to get a field tech to look at it) to be over a quart low of ATF. When my truck was killing my back over every little bump I was told "it's a truck, they ride rough - put some weight back there offroad and it will soften your suspension" - my U-bolts were only about 20% as tight as spec allowing the leaf springs to travel a long way and thus create a hard hit on impact. My truck was vibrating terribly with a wha wha wha sound on the highway and a stutter on stopping - this was resolved with a new drum in the rear which was out of round due to the dealership using an impact driver with god knows what torque setting to over tighten the lugs. My windshield cracked the first time I turned on the defrost on a cold day - paid $1000 for an OEM replacement.

That said - I love my truck now. First 6 months I was ready to dump it out of anger, but with the help of TW (and lack thereof from the dealership) to learn how to address the issues my truck experienced in combination with getting the ECU tuned properly, it is truly a joy to drive every time I hop in the seat.

Hang in there - it's a great truck and the warranty will cover anything that's wrong with it and you have a good dealership who is more likely to treat you with respect and make it right. Nothing's perfect, and unless you have the nightmare I did you'll get sorted!

Yeah, it's just frustrating. Just did a 700 mile road trip last weekend and everything seemed fine. Hoping it's something simple. I just don't want any shop kids working on my truck.

Checking the code first could tell you first, before you schedule an appointment with a dealer, go to the dealer, wait for them to even get to checking out your truck, check out your truck then come back and tell you it was something simple.... that something simple caused the code and you may resolve it yourself.

Checking the code first is a "is this something I SHOULD take it to the dealer for?" step.

Sure, there should be no harm in taking it to the dealer, except the expense of your time and inconvenience, but if it turns out to be something really simple you could have resolved yourself, you may have unnecessarily cost yourself time.

    Just sayin.

Update: Ended up being the gas cap, which I had pretty much figured out by doing a little reading. I had changed caps when I first bought the truck to a locking one. No issues with at least 4 fill ups and a good road trip. Put stock cap back on and tried driving around, shutting the truck off a few times hoping it would just re-set itself, but no luck. Stopped at an auto parts store and had tested before taking to dealer. Ended up being P0456, small EVAP leak. Dealer confirmed and re-set the check engine light. Back to stock cap and loving my new truck.

Sounds about right. I had a locking gas cap on mine as well for a week or so with no issues, but then I let the truck sit for 2 days while I was traveling and when I hopped in, had the same Check Engine light. I cleared the code and replaced w/ the stock cap.

Hopefully you don't have emissions testing coming up anytime soon - there will still be the permanent code stored that will take many cycles to clear and is stored so folks don't just clear codes on an otherwise non-compliant vehicle just to take it in to cheat emissions. So long as you aren't getting tested in the next few weeks you'll be fine though
