I see the same effects but don't think the major contributor is different gas blends, at least not in my area. During Spring we have temperature swings that take us from the 30s to the 90s... all in less than the time it takes to burn one tank. During warmer streaks I definitely get better mileage. I attribute it more to it just takes longer for the engine to reach operating temperature when it's cold. The longer it runs at less than optimal temperature, the more gas you burn getting it there. Good MPGs and ok MPGs aren't separated by many actual miles... just 15 miles less on an entire tank can cost you 1MPG or more.

My GPS is able to track mileage and MPG based on fill-up data. My first couple of fill-ups I got 16MPG. Very disappointed considering I came off a Chrysler Pacifica which easily held up 22MPG.

I can't give a definitive source for this change, because I did a lot in the first 3 weeks of owning my 2010. I added a K&N air intake, a magnaflow, and bought a scangauge, and altered my driving habits (which weren't bad, but weren't tuned into a Tacoma).

I'm in the process of calibrating my Scangauge, and haven't finished a full tank of gas yet, but it routinely gives me 25+MPG and even goes up to 30MPG when I drive an easy 35-40mph in town. Maybe things just had to settle (engine wise), or maybe the air intake and the exhaust did it, or at least aided. I'm happy again!

A good starting point for adjusting the SGII to one of our V6 engines is 10%. It'll take a tank or two to settle in a bit and you'll most likely see incremental gains as the engine (and your new parts) settle in with the ECM and your driving style.

    That's a huge difference.

The only way my truck ever has that much of a variance is if I pull a fairly heavy trailer. Doesn't matter what kind of driving I do otherwise.

Tomorrow I'll probably hit the 25% tank when it's recommended to perform step two of the calibration.

Also, I noticed that the ECM actually reports my speed as accurately as my GPS does, while the speedometer is still off. That is interesting from a A/D conversion perspective. I now believe Toyota has no more excuse to claim "tolerance levels" when the engine computer actually measures absolutely exactly the speed at which the vehicle is driving, but the speedometer is just off. I'll split this off in a separate thread in a sec, just needed to get it off my chest :)

I just filled the tank on mine today. I knew it was going to be a good one, but it surprised me - 27.3 mpg. This was filled at the exact same station on the exact same pump, and on the same setting, so no variables here.

I noticed that my SGII showed accurate speed as well, which I found amusing. I was wondering if others had the same experience. Made me wonder if I could just tweak the speedo a bit if it would be accurate as well. Then something shiny flashed and I wandered off...

Probably not, unless it's off by a static number across the entire speed spectrum. For me the offset seems to get bigger as the speed gets higher, this leads me to believe there is a analog/digital conversion issue which needs to be solved with reprogramming the appropriate A/D converter.

    MPG FTW!!

So when i bought my 2008 DC Sport tacoma I was averaging around 19mpg a tank when it was stock driving 80mph on the freeway and then some around town driving. Then I lifted it and put on 285's and was only getting about 14-16mpg if I was lucky. I account for the larger tires by multiplying 1.07 to get my actual mileage and i was still just sucking gas like crazy. I even averaged 13mpg on a few occasions.

Well I finally just slowed down off the accelerator and kept my rpms down for this past month and my mpg has improved drastically. On the freeway I keep me speedometer in a range from 70-74mph and rpms under 2100 and on my latest tank of 85% freeway miles I I got 341mpg on 19gallons for an average of 18mpg woot woot!!

I wanted to pull a kramer and take the needle further than it had every been haha but i chickened out!

Pretty happy with the improvement though. if I can go over 360+miles on a tank i think thats great for my truck.

So happy now because when I was getting 14mpg i was afraid to take the truck out last summer sheesh.

The only thing that really seems to effect mine is tire pressure.

If I put 29 psi all around which rides way smoother and gives me much better traction and comfort offroad I get 17-18mpg, if I put 32-33psi it can go up to 20+mpg. I won't pass the chalk test with just 32-33 though.

When I got the truck I had to drive 3 hours to get home, the thing got great MPG but the ride home was rough and the truck was squirrley as hell on the highway and I checked it and the dealer had 36psi all around, the tread wasn't even making good contact, but I got 22.5mpg on the first tank of gas.

Well, this is what I've done in the past few months in an effort to get my fuel efficiency back to what it used to be:

    - Changed to synthetic engine oil
    - Replaced air filter
    - Replaced spark plugs
    - Replaced rear diff oil
    - Replaced transmission oil with Red Line synthetic
    - Replaced transfer case oil with Red Line synthetic
    - Seafoam through a vacuum line
    - Techron in the gas tank
    - Tests with various grades of fuel
    - Various tire pressure adjustments

Nothing has changed it significantly, and I'm still getting a good 1-2 mpg less than I did a year ago. I'm still convinced my problem is simply due to increased amounts of ethanol added to the gas here. That stuff really pisses me off.

First tank that I ever put in my Taco last week was at 554 miles on the Odometer, got 332 miles out of 17.1 gallons for a 19.4mpg average. That was 87 with 10% ethanol.

If it was possible to buy gas with no ethanol in it around here, I'd be all over it.
