Shackle placement

Where would you hang a shackle on the rear of a Tacoma? Thinking if you wanted to use a tow strap to pull someone out of a sticky situation or needed to use a winch to extricate yourself from the back end of your truck.

I haven't had the chance to put it into use yet. Thankfully.

 

You'd need a receiver shackle like posted above.

Not trying to be a dick but will also just say if you didn't know this at all...you might want to look into how to actually use it and a winch. Because if you didn't know what this was I'm pretty concerned you wouldn't know a thing about how to properly use one. And failed rigging can be extremely dangerous, possibly life threatening.

Like for one...a tow strap does not stretch and will deliver a rather harsh jolt to both your vehicle and whoever you're pulling, often breaking stuff. you should be using a proper kinetic/snatch strap.

Trick is to not need it to be recovered but to recover a jeep

 

I used the Smittybilt version of this this past weekend on my truck. Worked like a charm. Would recommend. Drove into a mud pit I gave myself a 20% chance of making it through, turns out my chance of making it was 0%. Got pulled out via it and a recovery strap. No jerk needed just a clean smooth pull.

 

I am a bit concerned about buying a random one of these with no force rating. Granted, these are a big chunk of steel that should hold up to anything we can dish out...but there is always a chance it is made from crappy Chinese pot metal and can cause serious damage if it breaks.

Does anybody have options between these and a Factor 55 receivers ($$$$)?

 

I've used the smittybilt one plenty of times. no issues

I don't use the shackle it came with much since I often use a soft shackle instead.

I just picked up one of these hitch receivers, 2 D shackles and a 30’ recovery for 80 Bucks. All from Rhino USA and American made.

 

These are decent entry level straps for a good price

I have the bigger one but it has the same strap, great strap.

Its close in price, but by far one of the best straps you can buy. Has 15%-20% more stretch than a snatch strap like the ARB. I've used it once before from someone else on a trail and its one of the smoothest recoveries you could have.

 

I got a rhino shackle receiver from Amazon recently as well, quality seems good for a chunk of steel lol. Lifetime warranty and made in USA give the best odds that it won’t come apart.

 

Im extremely happy with all the Rhino products Ive purchased. It does seem well made, very solid. I bottomed out on the shackle a few times Sunday but it held up well.

Rhino makes good stuff, I have their shackles.

 

Ive been happy with their products so far. Hopefully they expand their product line.

 

I have two of the bubba soft shackles, absolutely love them basically like the ones you got. Fuck D shackles now. Honestly only time I might use one is in the receiver hitch

But much prefer the soft ones. Just so much safer if they do fail.
that ARB strap is great I've used it before and its perfect. I really only upgraded because the company I got it from is here in Canada and I like supporting our economy just like many americans enjoy supporting american made. Plus the price was pretty good at $215CND

Plus I wanted a longer one as my ARB was only 20ft. Besides if you read the tags on them you're not really supposed to use it over and over without giving it time to 'recover'
From what I understand reading about it in a 4x4 magazine, you need to allow the strap time to shrink back down. Otherwise you don't get that stretch because its already stretched out and it just weakens the straps over time.
So figure having a back up and one to alternate between is worth it for the trips I do.

From what I gather you can use it for 2-4 pulls then it should really be given a break if possible. If it means getting home obviously keep going but if you have the alternative use it. Or just alternate between whos strap you're using. Especially if the recoveries you are doing are rather harsh ones.

Sounds like my 'excuse' for getting a rope is to give my other strap a 'rest' Will have to get another BRO bag to hold it too.

I'm still being surprised about what this thing can do with just the sway bar removed. The need for a chain saw is the biggest limitation right now.
