    Hello everyone.

Do you guys remember the cracking sound that cars used to make when the timing was off?
I have a 2017 DC TRD Sport that is doing it occasionally. in specific situations.
Like for example when taking off from a complete stop and the engine reaches that point where the retard mode kicks in. If I have to accelerate pass that point a good 50% of the time it makes that crackling sound like the timing is off.
    Anyone else experienced this?

Not familiar with the "retard mode" option. Did you try turning off "retard mode"?

I almost bought a Ford once. Then I turned off my Retard mode and bought a Toyota instead.

As long as it’s partial retard it should be fine, because never go full retard..

Detonation like from low octane fuel? Mine does that occasionally

My 2015 some times retards timing significantly during acceleration. Can't get out of its own way when that happens. Instead of the usual teens/20s, the timing drops down near or below 0. The 2 times I took it to dealer were before I knew timing was dropping. Just went in for "intermittent power losses" which didn't happen for them so they couldn't do anything.

Btw, I always run 89 gas but tried 93 for a month. Better gas didn't seem to make much difference except the pinging sound was, might have been less harsh when it happened.

Mine is more than just a ping. Timing retards so much that pressing throttle half way and it barely pulls off from a stop sign as if it's just at idle. As revs slowly build it starts pinging.

Out of 20 posts in this thread, half are by second gen owners. Of those 10 posts, 2 were helpful. Can't imagine why the 3rd gen boards are a mess.

The manual talks about this btw OP. Maybe try and find it. I found that using 93 mitigated most of the pinging on my truck.

2nd geners are too busy being poor and having no truck for 3 months due to their rusted frames being replaced, that they need to take out their aggression some where.
