What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

You have to remember the front drive shaft isn't turning when the back is. Trying to shift into 4x4 the both have to be the turning speed or stopped.

 

Can you guys elaborate on that?

With ADD, my front driveshaft isn't turning when in 2wd, and I go between 2wd and 4hi all the time when moving. Don't see how it would be a problem with manual hubs either.

 

It is absolutely normal, don't ever try to shift into 4 while moving if your hubs arent locked

 

Because your ADD locks first which synchronizes the front DS speed with the rear, then the t case engages, otherwise without your ADD actuator you'd grind like shit too.

 

Cause with ADD the t-case 4wd shift is synchronized. The shift spins up the front driveshaft/ring/pinion then the ADD actuator connects the pass side CV shaft.

 

Are you talking about the push button 4wd?

 

That's mostly on the shits side of the equation, no giggles!!!

But, had you had the hubs turned in, likely, it would have meshed up without problem.

 

Could be your brake slave cylinder.

 

With manual hubs the cv's aren't spinning like in an ADD system unless the hubs are locked in.

No. I have a J-shift with ADD.

 

Ah... Doesn't the ADD auto engage even with the J-shift as soon as you start to change out to 2wd? If so, that would bring the drive line up to speed...

 

Yes, but your axle's still spin because your front tires are spinning. You don't have the "aisin" hubs.

 

The 4wd "position" switch on the t-case confirms the t-case shift into 4wd, push button or manual, this then allows the ADD actuator to connect the pass side cv shaft. At this point everything is spinning at the same speed. In Toyota speak "shift on the fly".

 

It’s not, rear oil seal has been leaking for a few months. But not as bad as that, I’ve had the parts to fix it a month but got lazy/my buddy was always busy

 

Ok, ADD shifts after the T-case... Do some J-shifts have synchros and others don't?

I stalled my other truck about 7 times just trying to move it into the garage. It takes some getting used to.

 

Not that I know of. I have a 99 FSM and it does not show a man trans t-case with out it, j-shift or "one touch". It does show the sync as "with man trans" but I can't see where an auto would not require the sync.
