HUGE gains from a tune from someone other than OVTune which seems to have bunch of issues as well. Almost as much HP at the WHEELS as a 2nd does at the crank! (225rwhp) Looks like a custom tune and only does it in house so far but they're located in PA.

My previous car I had dynoed at carb connection in kirkland and I've seen them do good work on some imports. Does anyone know of any place that does custom tunes for toyotas? I think a blanket-tune isn't the way to go like OVT's tune.

Even under invoice, dealers (especially large volume dealers) often have a little wiggle room between their bid price and the invoice price. A good indicator of a "good" deal is how much they squirm when you tell them to F off with their extended warranties, add-ons, etc. If they're banking on making their profit outside of the bid-ask spread, they'll push HARD for that stuff.

Bring your financial calculator and check their numbers. Even if you don't know how, pretend. Question their numbers and ask where they came from. The more uncomfortable you make them, the quicker they'll want you out the door.

I'd say the real question is what they are offering for the trade in - I think that's where they plan on making money vs just moving inventory

He said they're giving him "what he wants" but also acknowledges that they'll be able to turn a profit on it.

If he's happy that's all that matters, I suppose.

I buy and sell stuff for a living. First thing you always do is ask the other person what they want - sometimes you don't even need to negotiate.

Or hit up ballard sheet metal, good deals can be had there if your paying cash... also online metals prices for plate is outrageous... 25-30% more then elsewhere

Unless something changed, I was under the impression OVT will eventually get to custom tunes. IMO it will start as a blanket tune and undergo tweaks to squeeze any performance from bolt ons through data logging. Sure the best way would be to spend $$ at a Dyno shop for a days worth of runs to fully achieve what he does, but in less time. He does sell the hardware/software for people to take to a tuning shop if they don't want to wait for his tunes. I don't think he was expecting the response that he got and has been overwhelmed with the amount of interested people looking for any gains they can. :Dunno:.

    www.ovtuned.com/pages/frontpage
"Rest assured we don't tune for octane. We tune for the data we see. We don't throw on a blanket tune and hope it works, we slowly customize the tune, safely, to your vehicle and how it responds."

His most recent tune on the Dyno here showed 238hp on 91octane for the 3rd gen auto. I don't really see the benefit as it's all the way up at 6000rpm. Not your typical range of daily engine use.

I'm more interested in the 4.0 tune tho. :frusty:

I really like my 2nd gen, what I don't like is having to use 3rd gear to go over Snoqualmie. 4cyl 5spd never was intended to be a speed demon, even if I did gears and a supercharger, the 3rd gens have grown on me and I like the Tonka look of them more than mine now, and the added space in the DCLB over my AC will be nice to have.

Yeah they have a really good selection on that, that I haven't been able to source anywhere else, so I still end up buying from them rather frequently. Still got 20' of 2" ss pipe I gotta pick up from them sometime in the future.

I would argue that the 3rd gen has less issues than the 2nd gen. No frame rust, air pump, broken leaf springs, engine mounts issues, etc.

There's always going to be a lemon and a few recalls (as the 3rd gen is just on it's 3rd year) along the way but I wouldn't say it has more. There are just a lot of fiercely tribal 2nd gen members here (especially 14-15 model years) who don't like the fact that their truck isn't the latest and greatest. I mean the amount of trolls in the 3rd gen section is astounding.

Personally the only issue I've had was my rear diff seeping a little bit. I read that could be attributed to me going through water without a breather and the pressure could force the diff to seep. It's been fixed under warranty for free.

Other than that, no issues and no complaints about the transmission or power. Even with 285s on it still hauls ass (for a mid size truck) when it's in the power band and I'm not towing heavy loads so the "lack" of torque, which is really just 1 ft/lb less, isn't noticeable for me.
