    I plan to take it to a local 4x4 shop, they seem pretty cool. When I began calling around for some one to install a locker, they quoted me $600 with the master install kit. So I think they will charge me about $300. I need to give them a call tomorrow to see how much they will charge for labor.

    I agree. I think you have to press the bearings on and pull them off in order to get the pinion shimmed right. I haven't done it, but from seeing what others have done, it looks like it could take few times if it's the first time doing a regear.

    Sounds like a good deal on the master kit. Lowest I found was $220 at Randy's Ring and Pinion.

    Going from 3.31's to 4.10's is going to make a huge difference. Are the gears you purchased off a Pre-Runner or after market?

    They are used gears, they guy a bought them off said they have about 60k on them. The gears are coming from a V6 Toyota Tacoma (non-TRD), I think it was a 1996. So to answer your question, I don't think it was a PreRunner. I don't know too much about 1st gens.:eek:

    The gears have the following specs:

    • 8.4" housing (really 8" - see quote below)
    • 4.10 gears
    • 30 spline
    • the ring gear has 12 bolts

    I might as well list what I have listed for summer MODS:


    • baja style bumper (already placed order w/ a guy in PHX)
    • new gears (IDK what ratio yet) and ARB air lockers (
      $1,110 RD129 Air Locking Differential
      RD129)
    • some bigger tires (toward the end of summer)
    • Total Chaos Mid-Travel w/ Icon Dynamic Coilovers (in the Fall)
    I went to a Discount Tire about 3 weeks ago to have them test fit some 32x11.5 BFG All-Terrain TA KOs, it fit, but there has to be some trimming of the plastic fender and front bumper. To avoid cutting it up, I decided to get a baja style bumper.

    As for tires, I am considering BFGoodrich's KM2s or TA KOs:

    • available tire size for TA KOs
      • 31x10.5 (I am running these now)
      • 32x11.5** (does fit, need to trim)
      • 33x10.5 (Will test fit after I get new bumper)
      • 33x9.5 (If 33x10.5 fit, these will fit)

    • available tires for KM2s

      • 31x10.5
      • 32x11.5**
      • 33x10.5
    **I don't plan on running anything wider than 10.5. So I will not consider these tires.

    No problem. The guy who was fitting my tires owns an X-Runner, I told him about the site, he said he has to check it out. He did not have 33X10.5 in stock, so we did not test fit it. The 33x9.5 (All-Terran TA KOs) is not a common tire size, he could not locate one in AZ.

    Just a side note: My wheels have an offset of -19mm and backspacing of 3.75". With the right wheel combo, I think we can run 33s on a 5 lug.

    So I went home over the weekend, on my way home I picked this up... This is the only picture I have of the bumper, I was busy helping with graduation and other stuff, did not have to time to clean the truck. But here is a picture.
