Old Man Emu setups on 1st gens

OK we have figured out the problem. The company sent 2886 not 2883! The truck look cool as he'll but the CVs will break and the struts are topped out. So..... this is the final decision... tacoma 98 4 cylinder king cab (cab and a half) with with winch bumper and 12000lb winch probably weighing 150lbs.... shall I put on 2882 or 2883... extra height of the 2882 may be helpful but I am putting in 15mm suspension spacers and 2" wheel back spacers for 33 12.5 15 tyres and I figure the stronger 2883 coils are the way forward...? many thanks in advance for advice

Well that makes sense now. I couldn’t understand what you were saying earlier. I would think the higher spring rate of the 883 would be more desirable than the extra height of the 882 if your truck is really heavy up front.

 

For those who installed by yourself, what bolts do you reuse? Can't be much... I'm guessing the 2 bolts from the bottom of rear shock and the bottom of the front shocks as well

 

Just the bottom one, on 1st gens clean red locktite and 104ftlbs of tq on the nut . If you reuse a bolt wire brush the threads clean.

Sorry for the newb question, but do the following components comprise everything I need to perform the suspension upgrade myself? I have nightmare visions of tearing everything apart only to have overlooked a necessary bushing or something and then being up sh!t creek..

Is my truck going to drive/steer poorly if I don't also upgrade UCAs?

Has anyone used 5100's set to the second lift level with 881? I have been riding around for the past 1 1/2 years with the shocks set to 0"... now that the 881 coils have been broken in, they are starting to sag... I want to take them off and change the setting to get the front up a little higher.

 

Possibly an extended rear brake line. I never tested mine with the OE line, but it will be easy to check once you get your leaf packs installed. Just make sure there’s slack at full droop.

What made you decide on the 880 coil? Not wanting much lift?

I guess 880s because I have the 2.7L, and on several sites I've seen I get the impression my truck is "too light" up front. Honestly though I am pretty new to all of this, but that choice was me trying to play it safe a little bit. And yea, not wanting too much lift.

Am I on the right track in thinking this configuration would yield something like 2"?

 

I don’t know how much it would get you. 4cyl here too. I use the 881. It was a tad tall at first, but settled in pretty quickly. Even better with a little weight. Looked like this back then.

You’d probably have some serious rake with the 880

 

Here’s my 2.7 with 881s and 10mm spacer...sits very level with the Dakar’s and canopy. Defiantly stiff up front with no extra weight up there...And the 31s are too small haha

 

I gained about 1 1/2" with the 880 springs on my stock 01 2.7l reg cab... havent been on long enough to notice any settling

I also removed the 3rd leaf in the rear to compensate the height difference and give a smoother ride

 

Care to share your initial thoughts on ride quality with those 880 coils?

 

I got the rear lifted. Just waiting for the front components. Hopfully I can install this weekend.

I've got a 99 2.7l extra cab 4wd Tacoma, 33x10.5 tires, with a CBI front bumper + Warn M8000 winch and a few aftermarket round lights plus 2 tiny light pods in the bumper. 3/16 inch steel square tube sliders, home made and welded to the frame, Roof rack with tire on it (Yakima), shell on the back. Will be adding steel armor underneath soon (just have to find the time/way to get them from Cali since they are already free from a friend!).

My current setup is 5100's with stock coils and All Pro UCA. I plan to upgrade my coils with OME but i'm wondering what coil # is going to be the best to handl all of that extra weight. I do some pretty rough rock crawling at times if that matters for this.

What do you guys think?

 

882's and 883's are used with weight like yours. I'm sure more folks will chime in w more detailed info.

I believe 882's and 881's have the same spring rate, but 882's are taller. While 883's and 881's are the same height, but 883's are a higher spring rate.
