I think a profile drawing (looking at the rack from the front or back) would be helpful here. It'll help you figure out the angles for those 18" supports. Which might mean they end up shorter or longer, depending on the height you want it to sit.

I can't help with any specifics to welding up a rack like that, but my background is product design so I'm all for talking through projects like this

The recent exhaust work moved things around a bit and now is pointing at my spare. Might have to add a swing out to the rear bumper now or work on a reroute hmmmm

I’m working on the front view now actually because that’s the one measurement I’m missing and it the most crucial one

Cool. Yeah I'd decide the height you want and go from there. Otherwise, it looks decent to me. I'd probably think about anything that needs it's own mounting location (hi-lift, awning, etc) now as well, wouldn't want to find out your supports are too wide to mount things up.

My main concern is being able to mount my RTT, I’m going to leave my awning on the truck

Just one tracking number and it shows delivered. Wouldn’t be the first time UPS has screwed up a delivery here

Would a rear axle from 2001 4Runner fit on my 2001 Tacoma? I’ve read too many conflicting Yes and No’s

    well..

no. If you want direct bolt on. its a link setup not a leaf setup so there will be tons of brackets to cut off and then reweld on some leaf spring perched.

But if you want to do that..then yes haha

More work then its worth IMO

It would not be a direct swap, no. 4runner axles are the same width, gear size, etc. but they are coil spring suspension, so the axle will have coil buckets and mounts for a panhard bar and radius arms instead of perches for leaf springs like a Tacoma.

If you wanted to put some work into it, you could take all the mounts off and weld leaf perches on without too much trouble.

Edit: @Blackdawg beat me to it

4:00 PM came along and I got an email notification there was a new Tacoma at my local yard, which closes at 5:00 PM.

I think that's the fastest I've ever spent at a yard - I dropped the fuel tank in 15 minutes. Needed the fuel sender for my project truck since the fuel gauge is inop.

Would the axle shaft / hub assembly from a 2001 4Runner be a direct fit on my 2001 Tacoma (if gear ratios are the same)?

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Was going to take a picture of the high mount tail light today, but didn't feel like asking someone to hit the brake for me to take the picture... had my son step on the brake for me when I got home.

or just cut a little more off and put a down turn to point a little towards the outside

I took the coilover/strut off first and then compressed the spring so there was not pressure on that bolt from the top plate :D

Old shocks it gets the impact gun. That spring needs to be compressed first or it's going to be a closed casket funeral

So you did the bottom of the shock first and then the top? I know I'm supposed to compress with a jack but how compressed does the spring have to be??

For the love of all that is holy DO NOT TAKE THAT NUT OFF without the load being taken off the spring.

@Itchyfeet is right, it will be a closed casket funeral when that spring comes flying off. Those springs are under immense pressure do not mess with them if you don't know what you're doing. It WILL kill you.

Are you trying to assemble struts yourself? I'd be very careful doing what you're doing, try to crack it loose with all the pressure on it then use the jack to let off the pressure once you have it spinning a bit.

@tymeson, go find a mechanic to assemble your struts, there is a reason they do it with caged units that hold the springs in 6 or more places.
