At the end of the day though, with some mods you can get the sport to OR level of off roading?

Sure. ARB locker and you have even more options, like locking in 2wd like the poster above mentioned.

ok thanks. Some poster before made it sound like doing the arb locker and upgrading suspension is WAY more pricey and a hassle than getting an OR. But, wouldn't the aftermarket parts be better anyways?

It would be way more expensive than just getting the OR. Also factory warranty. Better? Probably, but not a lot of problems reported with the factory locker, other than it can be slow to engage at first. Certainly different.
Upgrading the suspension can be done as cheap as buying an OR owners take offs. So like $100 lol. Or you can spend much, much more.

so unless you actually want to get really into serious wheelin, a sport is good enough for "intermediate" off roading?

If you compare the Sport and Off Road in the same Configurations they have the same rating and the same exact price.

The Off-Road won for me. I test drove both and felt I got a better deal with more capability.

Neither are built for serious wheeling. Both are built the same, with components that either have on road benefits or off road benefits, Shocks could be swapped out in 2 hours and an air locker installed on a sport. Both are excellent platforms to build a serious off road vehicle. The differences between any of the tacomas suspension wise are minimal. I would take a sport off road and not think twice. Until I had to look over the hood. Every single one of the 4x4 tacomas is excellent off road. Trims aside, that’s what they were built for, even though the warranty dept may disagree.

Does the sport get the goofy digital inclinometer?

    Cause that’s important.

Yeah man I can’t see over it. Some can. But like I said, when on an incline it takes away from what I can see directly in front of me, and with this 3rd gen hood, I need every bit I can get when trying to navigate around a stump while missing the rut etc

If every Tacoma had one, I would make it work. It’s not impossible. But it’s aggravating.

After driving my 2004 Off-Road for years and nearly tipping over on every turn on the highway, I got sick of the poor cornering I experienced for years. So I chose the Sport this time. It corners way better. And I assume way better than the OR due to its suspension tuning. And I also didn't like the feeling of less headroom with the OR controls on the roof of the cab. It was already cramped in there as it was when I test drove the Sport. So those were my reasons for choosing the Sport. And heck, I go everywhere off road with my Sport. It handles amazing in 4 low. I'm never gonna need a locker...who am I kidding. I never used it once in my old OR.

As pointed out earlier, the locker would be helpful on a moss covered, wet boat ramp.

Is it needed? Probably not but more helpful than the scoop for the same amount of money since the Sport and OR cost the same.

I don't see OR owners buying Sport take off suspensions to get a better ride.

Locker only kicks in at 4l , not optimal. Both versions kickass.
