What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

So, I took my skids off today to do a few things - speedo gear, grease the driveshaft, and change the gear oil in the front diff. I'm going to write them all up as usual but there was an unhappy moment that I figured I would share early.

The fill bolt on the front diff was only hand tightened the last time it was installed (when the new gears were installed). When I inserted the hex wrench, it just turned freely.

Luckily, it didn't look like there was any leakage (at least, didn't look like anything had leaked down the diff and onto the top of the skid. And, finger tight was apparently tight enough to hold at least some pressure (all those fine threads?) because I tested the air locker twice and it seemed to work.

Needless to say, it's tighter now.

the one at "an angle" isn't supporting the truck. Its at almost full droop so that is why it is at an angle. The joint is doing what is supposed to.

 

I didn't watch it straight through but looks like the square tubing did better actually..Is that true?

Though my homemade ones are HREW but still square at 45º. Oh well. Whatever.

 

I'm trying to remember what BAMF sliders I have. I know I have square tubing on the main tube just can't remember if I got the HREW or DOM on the outer round tube.

 

I thought all of them were DOM? or did he make that an option now? Early on i swear it was all DOM...maybe not.

 

i'll be a trailer axle for sure for brakes and what not. no point in trying to source a 6 lug toyota axle around here. its not easy.

I use to build them for a living, It looks like your missing some parts. Whats the use of it, how many axles.

It's detrimental too. The Toyota rear diff and gear pumpkin would weight much more than a normal trailer axle.

 

I'm going through my PMs from the time of ordering. Pretty sure it was HREW that I got.

In my PMs from May 2012 he quoted me a price for HREW. I'm pretty sure that's what I went with.

 

Holly shit is that the mark up? I work for a steel distributor and I get material at cost. Didn't think I was getting that big a discount.

Nah Pennsylvania Steel. We deal with Logan though
