Which is weird to me since the engine is smaller and the transmission has an extra gear.

It will still take roughly the same amount of energy (fuel) to move both the old and new Tacoma. Both trucks are about the same weight. The advantage of the 3.5 is that its slightly more efficient so more of that energy is used to move the truck forward, the reason the new Tacoma is better on fuel but only when driven conservatively.

Make the user click a button that says OV is not responsible for any damage by manually editing the files. Removes all liability. Lots of us have a background in tuning and prefer to fine tune a generic map for our specific car/truck. I have two 675cc engines (3 cyl, triumph daytona) that are built identically, but the ignition and fueling maps are different enough that running the same tune on either reduces power/doesnt run as well on the one that it wasnt developed for. Granted these are race engines and every single hp matters, but the same concept applies for all engines they are all slightly different. The ECU does a fairly good job of trimming out those differences but the closer the base tune is the better off the ECUs logic is at getting it right, there are also typically limits set to how far the ECU can actually adjust itself as well. Elevation also plays a massive role, the base tune of an engine at 5k feet will be very different then at 0ft.

Personally the moment that editor is released is the day I rent out a dyno for a few hours and start fine tuning to my specific truck.

Yes thats all and well for you but the mass amount of people on the forum won't understand the fundamentals of tuning. I can see bad things happening.

I’m forever on the fence for this tune as I’ve had bad luck with tunes in the past, but it blows me away people are getting sub-16.5 mpg. That’s the lowest I see in gridlock Hawaii traffic (1-1.5 hours to go <15 miles) on 33” ATs.

Interested to see how a non-Atkinson cycle works out if it’s developed. This engine leaves a lot to be desired under 3,000 RPM.

I have a 1.5 mile commute. Average fuel economy 13.5mpg. No change after tune, just get there faster

I echo the surge/hesitation between 2500-3000 rpm. 93 octane fuel, 87 tune, warm engine, 70 degrees F outside temp. Didn’t notice it until spending time on the highway. I too thought I was on a bumpy section of road, it’s a sine wave feeling of surging. It was most notable when holding the throttle at exactly 3000 RPM in 5th gear (75 mph) or 3rd gear (50 mph). I was able to actually hear the surging when holding 3rd at 3000. I was unable to replicate using cruise control.

Still thrilled with the off the line acceleration, but as others have said now that I’m not deep in the throttle, I can feel the surging under normal acceleration between 2500-3000 rpm. Again, definitely more noticeable holding the rpm at a steady speed, don’t feel it at all coasting, under heavy throttle, or above 3k rpm.

Hope this can be resolved. I can imagine long trips on the highway could get annoying.

    Exactly^^

@OVTune, I emailed you a log file output (.CSV) from OBD Fusion WRT my drive to work this morning. I tried to hold at the RPM/throttle where my truck was surging as long as possible, but alas - traffic lol.

Again, the all cylinders misfire count was ZERO during the worst of the stutters - but I did get some when at cold idle and again at the end of my drive (parking the truck at work and hot idle).

    Thanks,

    Frank

Go back to your stock tune and see if it goes away. I have a 18 and have no surging whatsoever. I've tried too duplicate what some were complaining about and did notice any issue.

    I agree with this.

If you want to play with the tune yourself and know what you're doing, maybe email Mat and ask for an editor. He could ask a few questions and have you take full responsibility for your own fuck ups via EULA etc.

I wouldn't offer it to the masses though. Bad stuff will happen, and you JUST KNOW if someone blows their shit up and Toyota says FUCK YOU, there are idiots who won't take responsibility and will try to go after OVtune.

It's the world we live in these days.

And he’ll be like “the EULA you agreed to says don’t touch me bro”

APR (a popular VW/Audi tune) came out with this thing called APR+. It’s where they have an agreement with VW to tune a vehicle and still be covered by the dealer. It’s just a milder tune than the ones that’s usually sold.

Well I guess that would work for VW/Audi since they really don't give a rat's ass about emissions.

Hum, I hope this does get figures out. Just got my kit so I'm almost ready to flash. Would be a bummer if this is a mostly universal issue.
