Might be a noob question, but is it dumb / pointless to get a lift and upgrade suspension and tires on a sport and not also upgrade to a locking rear? Would those upgrades still make it better off road regardless? I’m at a crossroads now as to which version to get as I plan on a conservative lift and tires, most admittedly for the looks, but want some function there as well. I don’t see myself ever doing serious wheelin.

No worries! We get kinda jacked up here. If you'd have said you were thinking about a Limited there may not have been an issue!

Bottom line is this: what's important to YOU? The Sport is pretty, and the OR is more functional.

I look at them as women. One is sexy and makes heads turn but might be a bit of a prude. The other looks like she plays softball but enjoys a good romp. They both function fine and all the innards work the same, but one looks like you can take to the ball and the other likes to scratch.

I went with the Sport because it reminds me of my wife. Gorgeous and non adventurous!

So you admit I have neither crawl control nor a locking rear diff and I could still make it off the boat ramp?

Why not just get the SR5, it has all the on and offroad capabilities of the Sport at a cheaper price.

I admit your ability to get off the boat ramp is more limited than mine.

How is that, the Sport and the OR cost the same but you have the capabilities of the SR5.

OP can always install a take off suspension of the OR then he'll have the capabilities of your truck, the softer ride of the OR and still save money.

Somewhat on topic. Pardon the noob-ness, but I just learned about LSD as opposed to an open diff. I see that the sport does have LSD that would ultimately limit spinning of each tire correct? I’m just confused at what the locker does over the LSD?

I guess as a off road/4x4 newbie why does it seem the sport is being treated like it will choke the minute it snows an inch or hits a patch of sand? Seems like the very fact it’s a 4x4 over a 4x2 already gives it more off road capabilities than many vehicles, no?

Why do you continue to insist off road capability is the be all end all of a Tacoma? You have a locker and crawl control. Good for you. Show up to a legit rock crawl in a stock Tacoma and you won't be able to do jack shit.

I was watching guys off road TRD Pros on YouTube. They were going through stuff that I wouldn't, admittedly, want to take my truck through, but that would make a Jeep guy laugh. Any serious off roading would require heavy mods period. Additionally the guys testing bitched because they had no front locker.

Also, they used crawl control on a PRO AT. Then went through with just the locker on a PRO MT (because no crawl control.) Still got out. Does that mean one system is unnecessary?

The difference between you and me is I don't pretend my truck is something it is not. I have a street queen and I'm okay with that. You're delusional and think your OR is a Humvee.

You probably think your Miata is a legit sports car too.

I'm not talking about the ability to rock crawl, I'm talking about the useful tools you're getting for your money since the price of both OR and Sport are the same.

If the offroad capabilities of the Sport are the same as the SR5 then why pay the same price as the more capable OR?

SR5 can get off the ramp too, just like your Sport only much cheaper.

I'm sure the brake booster of OR is beneficial to towing also, another tool lacking in the Sport even though you pay the same money for it.

Not pretending anything. I just know value when I see it and if the OP is asking about value for the dollar I'm providing input about what advantages he gets for the same amount of money.

The miata IS a legitimate sports car... even has its own spec racing series.

    Mine is also boosted.

Get the tech package and you get colored matched bumper on off road.

OP, take a look at this poll I started. It'll give you an idea of what TW buys. I'm sure it's not a reliable poll but nevertheless it's more info for you to consider.

I always am amazed on the difference of opinions on here. Its simple as this if you want the off road because you go deep off road get it. If you want the sport for the cool looking scoop go for it. I have a sport and go on dirt roads in the woods during hunting season and it does fine. If I were to change my mind and want to go deeper into the off road jungle I would just get a SOS slim line and a winch for insurance. That may happen if I head out west after retiring from my job for an Elk hunt. While the cost is the same for both models I asked myself how many times would I need crawl control. Probably never. If I do get into where I do not belong hunting and get stuck I guess I will have to walk and get the tractor to pull me out.

    Here's a stock OR:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcqyZf_u6tE

    Same price as the Sport.

Like I said before, you don't see OR guys installing take off shocks of the Sport but if you upgrade, you have a market for your OEM stuff.

So if the SR5 can get off the ramp, an OR is clearly full of gimmicks that the people don't need. So you don't understand value at all. I could sell you a nice tool for the same price as a cheap tool. But if all you do is keep it in your toolbox because it was a "good value" was it really valuable at all?

An OR is valuable to you. My Sport has more value to me. It's all subjective. Until you are willing to admit that, there's really no point in continuing this... whatever THIS is.

Spoken like a true child. I'll bet your daddy can beat up my daddy too.
