I would definitely agree. My 18 will move if i step on it. No issues passing someone on the highway. That's the silver lining for me, especially coming from a tuned 3 series.

At over 2,000 miles now, I’m feeling far less clunking than at 1,000 miles. Every several days it still does an occasional minor, barely perceptible clunk just before coming to a stop, but not bad at all.

It’s feeling smooth, running well and surprisingly, getting better every week. I’m very happy with it.

Of course it’s a 2017 model, but there’s hope for many!

Trany is fine, gearing of the truck is wrong, no torque at low RPMs to move the truck in 5th or 6th gear

The transmissions don’t hunt for gears. They know where they are and which one to use.

In my honest personal experience, any complaints that came into my head after reading endless TW posts on the subject, seemed to go away at around 12,000kM (7500miles). At that point I either stopped thinking about it, or the engine and tranny were finally broken in, and any “learning” was complete. I imagine the whole issue is going to die off as the “go to” complaint about these trucks as more of them accumulate more miles. I doubt anyone will be discussing it as often in another 6 months.

My 2018 SR5 does this at very low speeds. I think its in limbo between keeping 1st or going to 2nd. It usually ends up in 1st and then continues to 2nd gear shortly after. I can make it do it between speed bumps at my complex. I may check the fluid level just to make me feel better, but I think its just the way it is.

Mine did it for the 1st time last week and it did it 3 times over 2 days. Same route I take 5 days a week, but it was the first time it has been below freezing for an extended period of time. However, its been below freezing this week and it hasn't done it once ha I think its just some axle wrap mixed in with a cold transmission and braking just at the perfect time all at once.

Edit: I have about 1,450 miles on my rig. I have driven a manual my entire life so it could just be me not knowing how a new auto works ha

25F3CA7F-E411-4BB3-A29B-AFD919C3929A.jpg Yep, I think all of those factors, the braking, transmission and it’s temperature play a factor.
I was thinking it was axle wrap on mine when it clunked once on several occasions when decelerating and applying brakes at around 15 mph while coming to a stop, but it always happened at the first or second stop about 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles from home, and then it would not do it again while running around town after it was warmed up. That’s why I don’t think it’s axle wrap on mine.

I haven’t felt that in several weeks, and it’s no longer happening on mine so it really feels like the transmission. It does it at such slow speed while coming to a stop with very light pressure on the brakes. It’s like you can sometimes feel a little surge as it downshifts.

It seems to be learning. No clunks with the cold weather and record late season powder snow in this part of the country.

Just get yourself a manual. So happy they still make manual trucks these days.

I have a 2016 TRD/OR and I love my auto tranny. The factory defaults were deliberately set in favor of fuel economy/EPA ratings. Toyota had to do it to meet their mileage numbers with the EPA. It's set up so the driver MUST MANUALLY OPT OUT of said defaults to really enjoy driving the truck. Here's my recipe for happy driving...

    1. Turn ECT Power ON every time you start your truck. With ECT off, you will always be served the most conservative, mileage-centric set of parameters for throttle & shifting. Turning ECT Power on loads what Toyota would call "Performance" parameters (but what I would call the "normal" shift/throttle map). Note how this setting requires an "opt-out" activation every time you start the engine and that there has been no way provided by Toyota to toggle it on permanently. This PITA is by design in order to force driver opt-out at each engine start, but it can be circumvented by a very clever (and well worth it) little plug-n-play module available from one of our fellow forum members HERE.

    2. Place your shift selector into Sport Mode and limit it 5th gear. Fifth gear, to me, seems to be sufficient overdrive for most urban/suburban/ local freeway driving, and this should eliminate most, if not all, of your seeking issues. I only enable the ultra-tall 6th gear if I know I am going to be on a long, fairly flat stretch of road for a long while.

Once you do these two things, take 'er out for a spin and put your foot in it. I think your enjoyment factor will increase noticeably.

I had a 16 SR5 access cab and it hunted like crazy till I had the flash then was great. I had 7800 miles on it when I traded in for an 18 OR DCLB and this thing shift so much cleaner. even better then after the flash. I love it. (for the record I just bought it and has 300 miles on it, all around my little town and 2 40 mile round trip highway trips) still better than the first 300 in the 16.

In Colorado 3rd gens get left behind! They shift worse then a one armed blind truck driver in the Rocky Mountains.(tested 18 off-road the other day). All the features are nice though when your riding in the slow lane...

I have a 17 OR trans is smooth I drive 44 miles round trip everyday I have noticed some hunting while on the highway but switching it into S while on the highway I control the shifting (Sometimes it does feel like its not shifting when I put it into a certain gear but I got use to it and I know when to shift now.) I got 1.5k on the ODO and after using S mode while driving on highways my mpg shot up to 21.5 havent tried it with ECT but at this point don't think i need to..

Hmm mine only happened after the 1st few stops within a mile of home, too. I guess I would lean towards the transmission as well. I get that light little surge/push as I slow down at times as well. Nothing too crazy though as I barely notice it most of the time.

Are you located in Oregon, too? We finally got snow the last few days where I am at in the valley. Nothing like it has been the past few winters though.

I can't wait. I will have my Polaris RMK loaded up in the bed as well. Maybe I will trade mine in on a Colorado with the Duramax while I am out there LOL. I have friends out in Crested Butte & Twin Lakes that I visit couple times a year. This will be first time with the Tacoma. I70 here I come.

I have the 4cyl 2017, 4 door. I love this effing truck until I get on the highway. Anywhere between 65mph and 80mph on cruise control and this is what happens: downshifts to lower gear to maintain speed, upshifts as the desired speed is reached, downshifts again, and the cycle continues. I keep getting jolted back into my seat every time it downshifts, and it really doesn't feel healthy for the truck. So what I do is I get in the slow lane, put cruise control on 60mph, then go up 1mph every 20-30 seconds until I slowly get to about 70 in the same high gear. That seems to work, very fucking annoying, but seems to work. I only have about 5k miles on the truck, I read that people need to break them in more, but I think that's bullshit. Something isn't set right. I'm going to keep it off the highway as much as possible until I get some clarity.
