Just picked up my ordered 2010 SR5 Tacoma Access Cab 4 cyl auto. Noticed a transmission shudder for about a second just after shifting into 4th gear at a rather slow speed around 30-35 MPH, felt like speed strips. It feels like a torque converter issue. My dealer said the health check performed was fine. They found a TSB for 09 year but none for 2010. I was told the transmission was learning my driving habits and just needed me to drive it. Truck has 225 miles but I drove another 2010 with same miles before receving this one and experianced no shudder. I want to prepare myself with amunition before going back to the dealer to take this to the next level with Service Director. Any TSB experiance or other suggestions would be appreciated:). I asked them to reflash as well but apparently not done since my truck had the latest programs

Did the dealer acknowledge there is a problem? In other words, were you or they able to reproduce the issue?

You can also call Toyota corporate and get a case# on it.

I produce the problem most every time I drive but apparently after speaking to the Tech, he could not after 15 miles of driving. The Service Writer first called me to pick up my truck but failed to tell me they could not duplicate the problem, I was told the dealer called a division in Toyota for TSB guidance and they were to advise customer to drive it for a while and let it learn driving habits. I was a little upset about Toyotas response but after learning the Tech could not re-produce my concern I can better understand Toyota responding that way. I just hate wasting my time and theirs but guess on the next dealer visit I will insist driving. I just have some concerns because the TSB bulletin the dealer handed me for trans shudder for 09 indicates the fixes as (1) disconnect battery for 15 min and reconnect to see if problem still exiist (2) Reflash ECM and (3) plus in a snapshot program in trucks computer to help identify the problem. I was told this only thing done was health check test. Some information out there also suggests to change transmission fluid, which the Tech said he thought about doing but decided not to then replace torgue converter. On a final note, Tech advised next time I feel shudder to lightly apply brake pedal to unlock torque converter. I did that and shudder elimated. I also disconnected battery for 10-15 min myself and problem appeared better for a while.

Also did call Toyota Corp on Saturday. I stopped short of opening case for now but was told they could do (2) things send factory reps to assist or suggest I go to another dealer.

Well that says a lot then (about the service dept, I mean). Definitely take the tech for a ride next time.

    Best of luck with it.

I just completed my appointment at the selling dealer about my transmission shudder. Although not optimistic it would happen, I met with the Service Director and we went for for a ride. The shudder problem now seems to occurs mostly as the truck slows down between 30 to 20 mph. I drove this time which I believe helped me duplicate the type of driving for the shudder to occur. As we rode around through back roads the shudder occured and the Service Director felt it. He believes I have a torque converter issue with either a sticky solonoid, defective sensor or malfunctioniing converter which keeps it engaged longer at lower rpms causing my problem. I was amaazed when we returned to the dealership and the service writer and mechanic who were disbelievers had that look of amazment that I was correct. Now, what are they going to do? I am waiting to hear back from my dealer, they had to call Toyota for authorization to either repair or replace my transmission. It's really amazing; they just can't believe this could have occured and I was right, they didn't really believe me until now and I still wonder after the mechanic was questioning the Service Director when we returned. I also called Toyota Corp. and opened a case before my appointment with the Service Director for added attention. The dealership advised me they have no transmission repair tech's on staff since they never had to repair a major transmission issue, I hope they find what is wrong quickly and resolve it, this should be interesting! I was looking forward to a trouble free truck and now this. What an eventful first 325 miles.

That shudder you speak of is normal. Thats what I was told. I did the tranny mount TSB etc, it helped a bit, but still feel it. You do get used to it though. Please post after your tranny is installed, im interested to see if it corrects. If it does, im going in for a new tranny.

Sounds like a load of bull to me. I love my Toyota, but it seems like they are having a lot of issues with their product and arent willing to fix the issue. That will be the down fall of them.

I had no TSB's available for my truck, it was built March 10th 2010. I drove another brand new 2010 Tacoma 4-cyl auto for a couple of weeks while waiting for the dealer to locate my vehicle and it had no shudder. If this is determined normal by Toyota we will have a serious problem!

Is your truck by any chance a 5-lug with 4AT automatic transmission?

Ok, then Im not surprised, I've seen others report your same issue, mine has done it but only when slowing down going down hill early in the morning. Since I let the truck warm up in the morning it has stop doing it. If you find out anything please share it, I would be interested to know the cause behind this.

Your saying yours does it when the drive train is cold. When I first got the truck, it was shuddering for a split second just after shifting into 4th gear and torque converter was locking up between 25-35 mph. Would only do it when driving slow. I was first instructed by Toyota that the ECM is learning my driving habits and it should go away after a few hundred miles.

Yes only when the drive train is cold and it was a strong enough shudder that I would have to pop the transmission to neutral to be able to stop. IMO what toyota is saying is BS I don't think it will go away, if I don't let my truck warm up I still get it and I'm almost at 5,000 miles on the odometer. If I get a chance I will record a video this week.

I have a TSB for shudder on 09's and early 2010. I was advised mine is up to date when they did the health check on the truck so it may be mechanical. The way I started to get their attention was to challenge them to show me another truck doing the same thing as they suggested. We took a new 2010 Tacoma for a drive sitting on the lot with the same drive train and no shudder. It didn't have to much time to learn my driving habits either (lol).

Fat Bobs 2.75 lift and level with short AAL, 16x8 Level 8 Guardian Wheels, 245/75R16 Toyo Open Country ATII, custom trans shift kit(home made), Trans temp. and Vac gauge, URD fuel pump upgrade(going back to stock soon).
Your trans. issues is not because of a faulty torque converter lock-up solenoid the RPM and road speed data would not allow the computer to lock-up the torque converter. The dealers that I have dealt with(more than 15 dealerships and 2 trans shops) have no knowledge of the internals I have opened up my trans. more than once and the truth is it is the same trans. that has been used since around 1989 the only changes besides ratios is: new valve body to accommodate solenoids and new pressures and check ball location(improvements to oil flow), and electronic integration(controlling shifts and pressures). The main concept of the trans. has not changed since 89.

Check the fluid level drive around for roughly 15-20min.(stop and go increases heat much faster) then place your parking brake on and cycle the trans. through the gears, then place the selector in park. Pull the dip stick and check the level if you are below both "HOT" marks the blame goes to the lack of fluids and the trans. will need rebuilding and all lines and cooler(radiator trans lines) flushed.

If the fluid checks out then do the torque converter stall test. Place your parking brake on and place the gear selector in "L". While holding the brake down floor the truck. The RPM of stall should be between 1900-1980RPM it is not uncommon to see the RPM's spike up near 2000 for a split second.

NOTE: DO THIS 3 TIMES AND TAKE YOUR AVERAGE.
DO NOT REV THE ENGINE FOR OVER 4 SECONDS WHILE DOING THIS AS IT WILL GENERATE A LOT OF HEAT FROM THE TORQUE CONVERTER.

My educated guess is the converter is perfectly fine but some sort of electrical MALFUNCTION is causing the shudder.

Your Trans is a A340E or the ASIN Warner code is AW 30-40LS. Same trans as mine.

I appreciate the information, sounds like you have been there and done that! My research on the A340E was a near bullet proof tranny. I tend to agree with you about the electronics but I have apparently caught the dealer off guard and it appears they don't know what to do. The fluid level was the first thing I checked just after buying my truck and is at the correct level. Since this is an intermitten problem as well and I can make a several mile trip without a problem they allegelly have called Toyota for guidance, but Toyota was the ones during my first visit who said the transmission has to learn my driving habits and I should just drive it. As I said before, the dealer does not have a transmission tech on staff and from what you stated many do not. I am not convinced this is normal since I put over 700 miles on another new 2010 Tacoma while waiting for mine to be delivered and it ran smooth for over two weeks. I suggested switching the ECM and appropriate torque converter sensors and let me try it but they are not interested in trial and error. The dealer also seems to shy away from taking a snapshot of my trans while driving to check the electronic pulsations of the torque converter while in operation. I believe the problem may not be identified until it actually occurs, kind of like a short but who am I? They base all there conclusions so far that my truck is electronically up to date and the health check ran showing my truck normal. If a problem is not shown when tested then it doesn't exsist. I hope to get a call soon.

According to Toyota, the latest TSB out there for transmission shudder is T-SB-0096-09 and (10) for the early 2010s, this replaced T-SB-0048-09. This TSB is specifically for 4cyl 4 speed automatics.
