Cross Wind front window noise TSB Update.

So his reply to that now was “your Tacoma has the new updated weather seals” .. I have heard the damn wind noise sometimes though .. super lame. Anyways a bigger issue arose. The Headunit must be replaced. They applied an update and it is still freezing on me. They are writing a letter to a Toyota Corp. unit could take weeks to arrive or days .. go figure.

 

Since the issue has been around awhile, maybe it was corrected in more recently produced trucks. My TRD Sport DCLB was manufactured in 1/17 and I can't say I've noticed it. But maybe because I wasn't listening, or whatever crosswinds I've been in had me focusing on other issues, like staying on the road. Maybe you should try that 1/4 inch drip line solution discussed earlier?

My 2016 was born in Sept 2015. I have heard the whistle only a few times and it was ONLY in a high cross wind scenario....! When it does happen, you cannot mistake it.....

I could not replicate it for a dealer unless we took it to a "wind tunnel"..! I do not normally drive out in the "open" where cross winds would hit the truck....(I live in the bush)...

If I were in Cheyenne WY, I bet I could recreate it easily..!! (I've biked through there)... Always windy.!!

 

My 2016 was built 11/2015 and the front doors howled like a dog when in a crosswind at fwy speeds. Had it documented on every 5K mi visit to the dealer. Got tired of waiting and bought $3 worth of 3/8" silicone rubber round door seal at the hardware store. Cut a piece the length of the top of the door seal and tucked it in behind the factory door seal. ( just makes the existing seal push into the door frame with more force )
Haven't heard a peep or had drip of water ever since.

 

Is this the same as the howl at 55mpg?

 

Found the guy with the Hybrid Tacoma.

No the Howl at 55 is from harmonic frequencies from the poorly engineered differential (opinion) resonating through the springs and what not.

Then there is a low speed howling that comes from the lower control arms due to holes built in. Theres a TsB for this as well which plugs the holes.

Then there is another TSB for the door weather stripping making a kazoo howl noise from crosswinds blowing through the weather stripping at highway speeds.

 

I appreciate it, OP! New seals ordered today. Finally, hopefully, that pesky noise will be gone.

I got that BS the first two times I mentioned it to Toyota. Of course they couldn't queue up a 50mph crosswind! Yesterday I had to show them the screen shot of the TSB with the number and description before they would do anything. Manufacturers piss me off when they pretend to want to take care of their customers then groan when they have to. I would bet the service managers are told to avoid TSB repairs, if at all possible.

 

Yeah I showed them the TSB too, but they insisted on replication. It pisses me off too, because I was in getting my WHOLE back window replaced. My original wasn't water tight and my headliner would get soaked during rain. And I had to take my camper shell off for that too (dealership wouldn't take it off - liability). They should of just replaced the cheap wind door seal just because of my other problems. But of course they didn't. So I bought $15 worth of 3M door seals myself. Waiting for it to come in the mail. If that doesn't fix it, I'm going back and I'm getting a tech to sit in my truck, and I'm going to drive 80+mph, to show them.

 

Don't put your topper back on too quick.

Your rear brake light might be the leaking spot. There have been many of those... Search for leaking rear brake light..!

Yeah, they checked the 3rd brake light first. I didn't know it was an issue on the 2016s. Originally, they thought it was that. But they said it was the rear window and replaced the whole thing

 

I have had the kazoo at freeway speeds in heavy winds since I bought my DCSB in early ‘16. It’s annoying but I’ve learned to live with it. A few months ago I added a Hondo Garage UnHoley Mount on my driver’s side vent, and routed a USB power cable up the front of the door opening tucked behind the weatherstripping for about 8-10” only, below the A pillar. This week I went to Death Valley and drove both north and south on US395 in very strong winds, and also had strong winds westbound on I80 over Donner Summit. I mention this because I think I had head, tail, and cross winds from all directions. No kazoo!! A couple of times I heard loud whooshes that I’ve never experienced before and prompted me to check that all my windows were closed, but never any kazoo. Could that 3-4mm cable tucked in there have done the trick? Hard to believe. The only other change I can think of, is that for this trip I cracked the slider in my shell to help with dust on the dirt roads, by pressurizing the bed area (cab slider was closed of course). I suppose that could change flow around the cab in some way also. Anyway, knock on wood, but I may be kazoo-free.

 

Yeah, adding the cable in the weather stripping probably eliminated the issue. People have reported similar setups that have worked for them. However, they used irrigation drip line to get the job done.

 

I’m an engineer and have some understanding of design of experiment etc so it does seem like this worked (too lazy to retest without the cable ) but I’m surprised it only needed a short section of the door opening to work, and not across the top of the door, like others have suggested. By the way, my USB cable is quite a bit smaller than 1/4” irrigation line, so it didn’t take much extra pressure to improve the seal.

 

Kind of ridiculous this is even an issue, on these trucks. It is sad people have to take care of it themselves, and dealerships wont. I added extra 3M weather stripping today to hopefully eliminate this problem.

 

Currently at dealer waiting for the tsb to be executed. I will update once it is completed.

NO, it's a high pitch squealing.... the air is being sucked out between the weather stripping and the area where it's supposed to seat. The weather stripping fit is too loose..!!

Only happens on left door with wind from the right....ie: wind over roof creates a low pressure at the top of the door and it sucks air from inside the truck, creating a squeal..!! (wind from left = squeal on right door)..!

 

Sounds like a kazoo.
