Everyone who is (or will be) running the tune on an AT should watch this short video (if they don't already understand how a TC works) so they can understand what Mat is doing when he changes when/how the TC locks up...

Technically you’d want a looser converter, the slip would allow you to get into the higher RPMs faster, which would make power faster. Unless these converters are stalling at a really high RPM because they have a lockup converter? It’s been a while, so correct me if I’m wrong.

Correct, and the man can comment here when he has time to come up for air after the AT release, but stock on these trucks it seems it's generally all or nothing and likely is partly incorrectly blamed for people's perceived grievances with the transmission. full lock in S-mode would seem to give you the most response though. I can feel mine go from stall to lock when I hit the gas but there is no slip I can detect like in pretty much any other AT I've had in recent memory. Sounds like he's solving it from both angles - beautiful AT shifting when in D with the half-lock on the lower gears which should lead to a very smooth transition, with the full lock option in S-mode which would be pure fun. RPMs won't ramp as fast probably, but every bit of power it's generating is being used to scoot!

Does S mode shift the same as stock? Say you’re in S4, does it still shift automatically up to 4th? Or do you have to shift thru all the gears manually? Sorry if it’s confusing

I have no clue how S-mode is going to work in 1.03... stock it is just a gear limiter and it does automatically shift up through the gears up to the top gear you have selected. For the last several weeks now I've been driving exclusively in S mode. If I'm around down and driving under 50 I keep it in S-4, then on the highway depending on speed I'll ramp it up to 5/6 to keep it in the 2500 rpm range

Edit: and the other benefit stock is that using S-mode disables the transmission learning features so it will generally shift the same way every time for better or worse. but now it sounds like he's achieved that benefit in D while also making S-mode more exciting

Basically I've built up the anticipation in my mind so much without knowing anything really about all the techy stuff he's talking about. So at this point that if the truck doesn't go from 0 to 88mph in 2.0 seconds with 60mpg, then have the torque converter transfer energy to the flux capacitor, have the valve timing go on full lock to 1980s Hill Valley, and send me careening into the past to see Marty's black Toyota truck I'll be disappointed.

Speaking of which, I'm still hoping someone sells a kit to turn the 3rd gen into this:

Don’t get me wrong I am excited for 1.03 but I do have a little concern in my mind as I see some of the MT guys are not as happy as they first were. I guess only time will tell!

some of us are looking at a need for some refinement with light throttle at low rpm. the changes are huge and great, no complaints, just further development. speaking for myself of course. i think the MT guys know Mat is committed so we're patient about it... but all of us want another Mat or maybe several more..

Meh, they're MT guys. They won't be happy till they have a shifter inside the truck to control the timing directly.

Mine was acting a little strange at first but after some more miles it has straightened out.

I had thought of doing this same thing, only using "OVTune Kenobi".

i can definitely say the same and I'm happy about it. but this little thing i just noticed. it's a detail that i wouldn't have found unless i was stuck in the jam. no big deal but needs fixing anyway.

Yup it could use a little refinement still but there’s still no way I flash back to stock lol I’m content until MT dyno day
