Rear facing console fans

Hello all, I’m looking for some opinions about the possibility to add a small computer fan or two inside the center console to move some air to the back seats. I have a dog who has always had his own air vents in the back but since the taco doesn’t he is constantly hot, which is a problem because he goes everywhere with me. He winds up in the front seat way more than he used to.

I think it would be simple enough to get two 120mm fans and rivit them to the back of the console and cut the appropriate size hole for them. Run a switch to the dash and boom, done! But I am wanting to get some vents to make it look factory and I’m having trouble finding something that will mount flush. Anyone have any ideas or am I just crazy for wanting to do something like this?

If you mount them in the console, where will the fresh air come from? Seems you’d have to run around with the arm rest open for the fans to actually be able to move air, and that seems like a pain to me.

 

I don't have ideas, but as someone who got a cap, inverter, battery and space heater installed in my f-150 bed for my dogs, I don't think you are crazy!

 

There's space under the cup holders and if you pop some inlet vents in the sides of the console it should work. You'll need a switch and fused power source. Not sure if the existing dash switch would work or if it is just a relay control switch.

 

I would just drill a hole on either side by the seat to use as an intake hole, I don’t need the air to really be heated or cooled, just moved at a decent velocity. Although heated or cooled would be preferable. I could always try and tap into the rear air lines that run on the floor.

 

Planned on an add a fuse for power and a separate switch for on/off. Most of the ones I found draw 2 amps or so so power isn’t a big worry for me. Really just mounting and being able to get a vent cover to direct air is my big concern currently.

 

Just a thought, have you seen those window fan set ups for the K-9 dogs? I don't know if you want something that visable or if it would even suit your needs. But you could find a already assembled one that could be an easy intallation.

 

There are vent outlets under the front seats. You may be able to make a duct from those to the fans, possibly even leaving the center consol out of the design and just mounting the fans in the extension duct pointing up at an angle. Might even be eaisier to use a slot fan, like this

That way heat and AC could be pumped to the back seat area.

The wife and I use a barrier to keep Boomer in the back seat, it is the mesh/hoop style allowing us to move it from one vehicle to another. He does not ride everywhere with us but loves going ANYWHERE in the truck or her Rav4. I have been toying with the idea of mounting a fan or two on the front side to help force more air to the back and just use the power outlet to push the fan(s).

Something like that connected to the under seat vents would be very good and could be left in place without causing any change to the front seat area vents. I may try to some experiments with some DIY fab'ing.

 

You can rig up a mount that mounts to the back of the center rest. And his wires through the center console.
