What's a good tire that gives you the All-terrain/offroad look, but balanced better for more street

Man I loved my Cooper ST's on my 4runner. I would trade the Coopers for these shitty Nittos in a heartbeat.

 

Just put some Nitto Terra Grapplers on mine. Came from the Dura Grappler LT's and went with P rated. They ride good for an all terrain tire, and road noise is not too bad either. That being said, Michelin is hard to go wrong with and I have heard good things about Cooper and Falken Wildpeaks - no personal experience with the Falkens or Coopers, but can say that the Michelins are a solid choice.

 

I was looking for your exact description in tires a few weeks ago before finally deciding on the KO2s. I needed a 10 ply as I’m in West Texas a lot and the whole of the southwestern part of the state is solid rock. When I compared pricing apples-to-apples with both the Cooper AT3 and Faulken Wildpeake in E rated tires, there was not a big price difference. Discount had the Presidents Day sale and our local manager bumped up the discount window a couple of weeks.

The biggest deciding factor was the wide availability of the BFG KO2s in inventory in all the places I frequently travel. If you buy the certificates, they don’t do you a lot of good if you’re a 1,000 miles from home and have to wait 3-5 days to get a replacement tire. Every store I checked had usually four tires in stock in my size.

So far, I have experienced no noticeable increase in road noise, the ride is firm but smooth, and through three tanks I’ve seen only a negligible reduction of MPG (like 10-15 miles less than a normal tank). I’m happy with the purchase and the peace of mind that I have ready access to same tire in inventory all over Texas, New Mexico, and the rest of the southwestern US.

What size are your AT2s? Looks really good.

 

These are stock size . 265/70/r16. They honestly look meaner in person. I like the tire a lot though. Mild enough to not kill my gas mileage, just mean enough to not make me feel like I put street tires on it.

 

Apparently they come in C load now, which is a plus. Lighter!

 

Thanks that's good to know. Your tires definitely look beefier than mine. I have a '17 Sport with the stock 265/65/R17 tires. I was thinking of sticking with tires designed for highway driving but increasing the size to 265/70/R17 to get a little extra height and slightly more aggressive.

 

I must have a strange truck. I had Cooper AT3 and hated them. spun on wet grass and horrid in the snow. I purchased KO2 and second year of winter on them with no noticeable decline in traction. honestly am impressed with them that they may be my next set again

 

If you truly want the top performing highway tire, the answer is Michelin Defender M/S 2's. That tire receives top marks from every person whose ever purchased a set. Not fun to look at, but blows the competition out of the water in on-road performance.

 

I concur. Highway performance would be hands down the Michelin.. Its a tough call if you like a truck that doesn't look like its rolling on car tires

 

Honestly, if I had a set of 17" rims like you, I would be riding on Nitto Terra Grappler G2s right now.

 

I've heard great things about the Michelin Defenders too. Most folks on here that have swapped out their stock tires do so for all-terrain tires. Not sure I've seen anyone post pics of Defenders in 265/70/17, would be interesting to see. I know the tread won't look aggressive but perhaps the larger size would look a bit better on the Sport.

Michelin is absolutely a tire that will make anything ride better . I recommended the Toyos to the OP simply because they have a more aggressive look while still having good highway manners. I know Michelin doesn't need my help but I think they're missing out not not having something more aggressive looking.

 

The only issue we have had with Michelin is when they are the stock OEM tires on a vehicle. Seems when they OEM equipment they don't last very long. But the ATs do have a long ass tread life rating

 

I agree completely. I would buy the hell out of an aggressive Michelin. I own the At2s currently. My guess is that they cannot maintain ride quality while going more aggressive.

 

At2s have 65k warrranty. ms2s are at 70k.

 

yeah kind of crazy for a tire to be warrantied to last that long.

Friend of mine had the AT2s, rode nice, and got good MPG out of it. Tread pattern and sidewall started to lack when you pushed the off-roading on it. But its kind of expected, I kind of look at them as an aggressive passenger tire.

 

Just put some new Michelin's on the truck this week (Costco) ... Defender MS (like the old MS2's) ... and I love these tires.

Had these on almost every Tacoma & Tundra in the past... great tires.
