Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

Where did you put the RTV? Or did you use a strip of closed cell foam gasket along the full length of the rails (per my recommendation in a previous post)

 

I put it down the whole outside of the rail.
I havnt tried the gasket yet. Guna try it this weekend. Just use the one that pulls apart into 2 and instal on the underside of the cover?

 

No, it is too thick, you have to buy it- see post #120:

That foam works great. I too am leaking but think it’s due to no weatherstrip on bulkhead? I only got the really thick strip and did not apply that one. I did not receive a second strip that you guys have mentioned. I think I may just go to the store and grab some rather than try and go through Bakflip. @tekoma do you know what size I would need to go along bulkhead rail?

Yes, I am sure. It will cause your rail to twist. It you look at my earlier post you will see the goal is just to fill in the radius of the top edge of the plastic bed rail. You don’t want to add a seal that will lift the rail.

 

3/16” thick by 3/4” or 1” wide should work. Make sure it is closed cell foam- EPDM, Neoprene, or Silicon.

 

Thanks. I had just contacted Bakflip and they said they don’t have a “double wide seal” they only have the one thick one. I explained multiple people have shown pictures of this seal and they stated they don’t have one still. Said I need to use that thick ass one. Guess I’ll try it out. Just seems to thick though....yes I see what I said haha no need to point it out

 

The thick seal they include is simply way to thick. Even the “double width seal” which maybe isn’t included anymore is too thick imo. 3/16” should be just right

 

Don't mean to rain on the (leaky) parade but these last several posts are kinda steering me away from the MX4 and pushing me toward a Diamondback! Is the Bakflip a little needy to get it right? I don't want leaks but I don't want to drill either. Am I overreacting? The Diamondback looks amazing and the install looks pretty straight forward. Of course, it comes at a cost...

 

Ok I'll look for one of those seals. I just took this. Looks like the drip is coming overtop of the backflip rail instead of in behind

 

I ordered my MX4 and it's being shipped as we speak. Does anybody that has one these know if it's possible to store any light cargo on top the cover and be able to strap it down? Really looking forward to installing this cover and doing the sealing that @tekoma recommended. Thanks for all the write ups and pics, will definitely make my install easier!

 

I had a stroller in the back of my truck, and even with the mx4 cover, moisture still gathered on the stroller and it started molding . So i guess water stays out, but moisture can still gather inside.

 

Yes. I tried that seal once it arrived and it was way too thick. I applied a deal and it drastically reduced the amount of water getting in. I added a little black silicone but need to add a bit more I think for a better seal.

 

Just bought mine directly for bakflip. I got the mx4. I will update if I got new rails and new instructions. Water test will be a hose cause in socal we don’t get much rain.

 

Ordered on 4–4-18 for 2018 Tacoma 5’ bed

 

Keep us posted on the new orders. I'm holding out for the new prop rods.

 

Does anyone have an Amazon link to the 1/4" wide by 1/8" thickness seal for the @tekoma method? And we need at least what 12 feet?
