I dont know how this will go over. Like I said, this guy was actually cool and was just letting me know about it. Maybe they aren't giving tickets yet and testing the waters. I will still drive with my fogs on if I want to because I rarely ever come across a State trooper, and the city cops don't care.

In my state any second set of lights are considered the same as high beams. They must be turned off approaching a car from the front or rear on a public roadway. So a fog light even on during the daytime must be turned off if the lows are on at any time a high beam would be required to be turned off. They make it really simple here. Sounds like other states make it more confusing? The only exclusion would be during a time low lights are not required then fogs can be run separately. But the fogs must be on without the lows being on and it must be a time when headlights aren't required.

Reality is that some of the factory high output headlights are far more distracting than properly installed fog lights could ever be. Acura’s jewel style lights are an example, absolutely blinding when they’re coming towards you.

Good thing in Virginia only two auxillary fog lights can be operated at any time of day in coordination with headlights. Sorry to hear its not the same with your state.

It's pretty much impossible to see far away and close up at the same time. But I understand... it's all about looks I guess.

Can’t you do the fog anytime mod on 3Gen?

I have on 2nd Gen with Morimoto XB’s, they don’t blind you, especially aimed properly.

You're driving lights go forward, your fog lights go wide. The fogs help on backroads to see if a deer is in the woodline. High beams would let you see further to see if one is lurking near the corner coming up. Both do different things, and would help being run at the same time. You shouldn't have to switch your lights back and forth every few seconds to be able to check both, just move your eyes quickly to check the sides, then look forward again.

Some high beams go super wide, and negate this benefit, but a lot of them don't.

Well, I just got a cops opinion, he would not pull someone over for it, but he would if he needed an excuse for something else

I had a ZR2 Blazer, I had fogs wired separate. I had 30 mile country drive every day late night. Turned high beams off when car came, never got flashed, never got pulled over for it. I saw a lot more animals this way, Did this for 10 years.
The thing that does get me are people who have no lights on when it's foggy or snowing. And most times it's white vehicles.:notsure:

That just doesn't make any sense. My '15 Camry XLE uses the fogs as daytime running lights and when the headlight turn on the daytime running light become fog lights which stay on and cannot be turned off.

I'm boarding the "fog lights aren't bright enough to blind drivers" train. I do not roll around with my fogs on when there's no fog because they aren't the same color as my HIDs but I see no problem driving around with fogs on all the time. As others have said a lot of the more premium cars on the road that have really bright headlights, even when properly aimed, are far more bothersome/blinding than the weak halogen fogs in Tacomas.

the LAST thing you want to do is put more light into that dark spot in front of the truck. It is there for a very good reason. First of all, if you are on the highway and you did not see something in the high beam pattern, by the time it is in the "dark spot" you are going to hit it anyhow. The whole purpose of high beam is to see what is there at speed far enough away so you CAN avoid it. When you add light anywhere but the high beam target area far ahead of the truck, you cause your pupils to restrict and flood the rods (night vision) part of your eye with too much light and decrease dramatically your ability to see what is farther away in the much more dimly lighted area of the pattern - the place where you can see something in time to avoid it. The same comment applies to dash lights (need to be full dim or dimmer), post mounted gauges or windshield mounted accessories. Night vision is all about CONTRAST - so why do people want to set their vehicle up to do the equivalent of shine a flashlight into your eyes while looking to see things in the distance???

Secondly: fog lights - REAL fog lights (that are very rare) will not reflect light back from THEIR pattern, but it is your headlights that will. They must be OFF when driving in fog or snow...IF you have really good fog lights aimed properly. You THINK you are seeing less light reflected back when your fogs are on with headlights because they do just as I described above - put a bright spot close up destroying your ability to see what is further away (i.e perceive that light - and anything that is within it you are trying to avoid).

seriously are you that dense or have you never actually been offroad after dusk? we're not talking about highways at night where eye focus needs to be far ahead, hence no point for fogs.

it's the ability to be able to use the fogs when off the highway for navigation yet still see farther out to determine your direction of travel. No different than folks using light bars or LED ditch lights.

i swear, it's people like you that make oem's have to make everything automated and we have to go back and modify things just to have options as we need them.

you've obviously never had to turn off a highway onto a dark road with ditches on both sides.

proper fogs allow you to see to the sides with a wide pattern while your low and high beams point out front. many times i've misjudged turns on dark highways and turn offs where all i had were my low/high beams and couldn't see outside of that narrow light path.

properly aimed fogs will not blind oncoming drivers so those who keep touting that bs can just stop.

in my 30 years of driving have never come across a driver with fogs on and said, "damnit, that asshole has his foglights on and i can't see!"

now idiots with the hb's on and light bars on on the other hand i've seen quite often.

How is it impossible? That's exactly what this mod would do, for me anyways. It's not about looks, it about visibility. Maybe your truck has never been off a paved road at night but having both would be fantastic.
