It's tire time. ..2nd gen with factory steel wheels....what decent A/T tire do we reccomend these days that will not break the bank?

    I'm NOT a rock crawler!

But I do off-road some and am not shy of snow or mud.

I have the cooper discover ATP, I like them and they are not too heavy or loud. Also I got a deal on them from discount tire on eBay. Just showed the local store the eBay price and they matched it.

If you don’t want to break the bank: I had General Grabber AT2’s and liked them. The new version, the ATX, will be for sale in about a month.

That being said, I can’t find any negative reviews on the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, and this will likely be my next tire.

Stupid question about the Duratracs (and AT tires in general). The truck I recently bought has 275/65/18 Duratrac tires that have just about reached the end of of their life and I need to start thinking about replacing them.

One thing I noticed about these tires is that they don't handle very well in the rain. If I'm stopped and I barely press the gas, my tires are spinning.

This my first experience with AT tires so I have no reference point on how they perform when compared to others. To skew my judgement even more, my previous vehicle (that I grew accustomed to) had Pirelli All-Season Tires and was Front Wheel Drive. As a new Tacoma owner, I'm trying to figure out what's normal and what's excessive.

My question is, when it's raining and my tires seem to be spinning like crazy is that:
    1. Typical of AT tires?
    2. Typical of Duratrac AT tires?
    3. Typical of worn out AT tires?

I am running the General AT2 as well and love them. Great offroad and no road noise on highway....and very affordable

    1. Typical of AT tires? It depends on the tread design and siping. If the tires are bald or at the end of their life, they will not perform well on slick surfaces. Can you post a pic of the tires/sipes?
    2. Typical of Duratrac AT tires? See above
    3. Typical of worn out AT tires? Yes
Just to clarify, the Duratrac is more of a AT/MT hybrid, with elements of both types of tires. Most tires will not perform well if the sipes are no longer adequate for traction.

I saw a bunch of posts on here of people dumping the Falkens due to premature tire wear, but that was the LT's not the SL's. That being said, I run the SL's and am not experiencing any premature tire wear. I am happy with them.

Tires have less traction as they wear. Also, the tire compound degrades as the tires age, resulting in less traction.

FWIW, my Duratracs were replaced after almost 35k miles. They were not worn to the wear bars but it it was time because it snows here (well...not so much snow this winter).
