So you’ve had no howling or other OCD issues? I’m a picky OCD SOB so things like that, that aren’t fixable would drive me nuts.

You will be fine, you are
Every other Toyota and Lexus Model finishes above average so it cannot be a payoff thing, it has something to do with the goofy scoring system they have, counting ride and seating position as part of reliability.

The Howling can happen on either Manual and Automatic, seems to have been confined to the new 8.75" Rear. It is not a Mechanical Problem, it is a Harmonic Vibration that occurs between 50 and 60. Toyota was aware of the problem and just released a TSB, it has some different Rear Springs and looks like different cab mounts, guys that had it done said it fixes the problem.

If I had a nickel for every TW member that claims they're OCD......

Clearly you're not otherwise you'd have already driven a bunch and now come to us with a list of deficiencies you found and expecting explainations.

Don't be lazy, drive a few trucks and SUVS for yourself and see where your "OCD" leads you.

If a worthless magazine article make your decision to not buy a Tacoma, you should be in a ridgeline anyways haha.

Every vehicle has issues. Every vehicle has recalls. IMO there are a ton of unrealistic babies on TW that would have been euthanized and put out of their misery if they grew up in previous generations. The complaints by some are so ridiculous that I am surprised they make it though each day without ending up on the floor in fetal position crying until they can’t breath anymore.

In the past I would read (other) forums complaining about an issue that people would solve collectively. Here on TW the focus is on how Toyota quality has diminished, how Japan won’t let the Americans design the 4th gen and the list goes on for days. Honestly who the F cares about some ex-Chrysler employee name Mike Sweers? Yet some feel obliged to slander this guy and for what end result?

TW has some great people who will help you out and have their feet firmly planted on the ground and in reality. They are who you listen to on an Internet forum. Then there are the others. I honestly can’t tell if there is a huge population of 13 year old Tacoma owners on TW. When they make such stupid remarks constantly I have to wonder about the reliability of the Sony PlayStation because it is pretty obvious that their gaming system is not working and they are here trying to find online friends.

So the point of my rant? Some people have trouble free 3rd gen Tacoma’s with only the minor complaints. Others do have issues and they have warrantee to hopefully solve the issues. And some just need to be ignored. They had me upset and questioning every little issue until I realized my truck issues only started after I read about it on TW. Once I stopped drinking the Kool-aid my trucks issues diminished. Good luck in whatever vehicle you choose.

I was just sarcastic meaning it looks as if or seems like sometimes there are products rated highly by CR but turn out to be duds later on.

Quit reading CR almost 20 yrs ago when they bashed my susuki. When you read the actual test on roll over they tried 10 times to put it on its side and failed, on the eleventh time they exceeded their own speed protocals to get it up on two wheels.

I have a 2014 DC trd offroad with 11600 miles on her, running like a top. Only oil changes, filters, 2 set of tires. Just put front brake pads on her. Buy a taco you wont be disappointed. This one is number 3 for me.

My truck is my baby. 7k miles so far without a hiccup. The only thing i would say would be to test drive it before you buy it.

Thanks man. So sounds like that fix would be on a 2018 that was just built in the last month or so? I guess as long as it’s fixable with warranty that’s piece of mind. Hopefully I won’t hear it.

If you are worried purchase a hybrid, then drive it off a cliff.

I don't think those new parts are used on the 2018s, they are probably only going to fix it using the TSB if your truck has the Howling, it will not impact the reliability of the truck.

Yep, a TSB is used to correct a deficiency that's already showing symptoms in a truck, it's not necessarily adopted across the board and automatically installed in later versions.

Are the 2018 trucks coming out with the LCA plugs installed that was identified in 2016?

My 2017 came with the Lower A Arms plugged from the Factory so I think the all do.

I think its a misnomer to even categorize the rear sound as a Howling, because you can only pick it up at a certain speed and is barely audible unless you try to make it an issue, a howling rear would be more audible and present at all speeds and RPMs, not just at 55mph feathering the throttle to make a case of imminent failure of the differential. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Iopg8IFVgw

tsb is a software fix? I thought that poster mentioned new parts installed that were updated. I guess at this point I just need to hope there’s no howling... but if there is I can get it fixed.

Honestly, I would just pass that off as supposed to be there! Maybe it’s worse in person

You must have never owned a truck before, all of my trucks have made random noises one time or another.
