I too owned Subaru 4WD (wagons) back in the 70's-90's. The better term is "engaged" the rear differential to go from FWD (front wheel drive) to 4WD (four wheel drive). It was not a locking differential. They were most surprising for what they did! When they went from real 4WD to AWD and no low range, they lost me.

So a base 4x4 dodge ram that many will lift and turn "bro" comes with a locking rear standard? I was under the assumption a locking rear was something that would come on say a ZR2 colorado, but not their base 4x4.

I think what I'm trying to ask is... do most 4x4's come with a locking rear... or is it usually just the off road / more pricey models?

I think Toyota with Ivan Stewart's input in creating the TRD Off Road is well ahead and mostly in quality control.

The Ford Raptor, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and other off road 4WD vehicles have locking differentials... but they are not Toyota!

Right... so the majority of "regular" 4x4's out there usually won't have a rear locker unless aftermarket?

Not sure what the standard rear diff is on the Rams, I do think the Rebel and Powerwagon have the same type of electronic locker that we do though. I think the Colorado and Canyon come with an automatic mechanical locker.

Pretty sure the rebel does. But again, these are more expensive, off road specific vehicles.

What I'm getting at is, I'd be annoyed if all the competition, even in lower standard 4x4 models had rear lockers but none other than the OR have it for Toyota.

Are you talking the off road specific models in the colorado and canyon, or every 4x4 model?

As I mentioned, the Colorado Canyon comes with the Eaton G80 Mechanical Locker, pretty sure you can even get it on the base model 4x2. Lockers of some form are going to be availabe on most trucks. If you like the idea of a Factory Locker then it is here for you on Toyota OR and you won't run into possible warranty issues by adding an aftermarket one.

Other auto makers offer rear lockers, some offer front too. It's a very competitive race to be at the top of the offroad kingship. TOYOTA does not offer state of the art in the Tacoma, TRD Pro included.
For that, I would say the Raptor does, at least in PU trucks IMO of course. But also IMO TOYOTA offers the best mix of function & sophistication vs reliability. It does no good to have the best armor and offroad gadgets and go no where due to mechanical failures.

The more you add the more issues you may have. For years, the Range Rover has been at the top of introducing the latest and greatest offroad toys and they've been amongst the least reliable, vs TOYOTA being the most. Not that it's because the Roves are basically re-packaged re-priced Fords, but more due to all those bells & whistles lol! But again IMO.

If they are available on most any truck that is a 4x4 out there, why would Toyota ONLY put it on the Off road? something doesn't seem right.

If I'm being confusing I apologize. All I'm asking is I was under the impression a rear locker like on the OR is a special off road specific kind of thing. An added plus for more serious off roading. So it would seem to me that other manufacturers would do the same for their off road specific models. Not on every model they have. So thats what I'm asking. I may seriously reconsider the sport if its standard on ALL other 4x4's out there but somehow the sport doesn't have it.

They put it on the Pro and Off Road to differentiate it from other Tacoma Models. Toyota runs their assembly lines to stick with certain combinations, the less differences makes for a more reliable end product.

And I get that. But a locker seems pretty important if other manufacturers are putting them even on their base 4x4, non off road marketed vehicles.

I am pretty sure Ford sold Jag and Land Rover a decade ago to some Company in India, that would explain bad reliability. I think new upcoming F150 Diesel is coming from a Land Rover though.

Did it have a two speed transfer case?

Friend of mine had an old Subaru with high and low range. Thing was awesome.

do you know for sure that every other basic, low level 4x4 from every other manufacturer comes with lockers? My buddy with a 2016 basic 4x4 ram says his doesn't have it. And, I just did a search and apparently the Rubicon from jeep only comes with a locker. And thats Jeep.

I did not research every model out there, my guess is that the Ridgeline is the only one you cannot get it on because it is Front Wheel Drive based. I wanted an Off Road Manual Tacoma and waited 3 Months to get it, it was worth the wait.

I hear you, but I'm pretty sure rear lockers are usually on the higher end, off road specific models in a 4x4 line up. I'm not talking whether or not they are available or not. I'm talking do their base 4x4 models (NOT off road specific marketed like a ZR2) have them or not. This is from the limited research I've done though. Maybe others can chime in.
