SR5?

I am looking to hopefully buy my first Tacoma in a couple months. I am leaning toward get an SR5. My current truck is an 1985 S10 (144k miles) that I have had for 18 years and my father in law was the original owner before me. I plan to keep any new truck a long time as well and do not want or need all the bells and whistles. My question; if you were to buy a 2018 Tacoma planning keep it 20 plus years which trim level would you buy? I am not a serious off roader, but I hunt and fish and leave the pavement some, but not onto very rough terrain.

I plan on keeping my current truck for a very long time so when I bought it I got a trd off-road. For me it was worth the couple extra grand to get a pretty well loaded truck.

 

Welcome to Tacomaworld. I went with the Off Road. That’s my recommendation. Im working on armoring her up but dont plan to do any major mods. I do not plan on getting rid of my Taco so I wanted to make sure the one I got was the one I wanted. Many will say the sr5 is just as capable, and it may be but the locker was big for me. And the led headlights.



Edit. This past Sunday at Hollister Hills my locker got me out of a sticky muddy situation that 4lo wouldn’t get me out of. Deep muddy ruts and the tires were just spinning in place. It disnt seem bad until I was in it. First time I ever used my locker and it got us out easily.

 

I love my SR5 DCSB AT. It's enough truck for me. I didn't get 4x4, the dirt roads leading to my house are pretty rough especially when it rains, and it's been plenty capable, so far. I don't do any off roading myself either. My lady and I go fishing and camping occasionally. Sometimes I wish I got the 4x4, but overall I'm very happy with it. I see a lot of complaining about the AT, but I don't have any problems with it, because I understand it. It's tuned for mpg, but I mostly use ECT PWR mode, makes it a bit more responsive, and not a significant drop in mpgs. I commute 80 miles a to with, and I average 25-27 mpg hwy. Unless I'm late for work lol

 

If it fits your needs, then you can't go wrong

 

I'm happy with my SR5 4x4. I do not intend to do any serious off-roading, but the 4x4 option will hold its value and make the truck more desirable should I ever decide to sell it. My intention is to keep this truck for as long as I can. Like someone put it "it is enough truck for me".

 

I bought a TRD OR but doing it again, I’d just go SR.

 

Not an off roader to me means no nead for rear locker. Stick with sr5

Thanks for the replies so far. My biggest reason for the SR5 over the SR is that the SR doesn't offer a long bed with the crew cab.

 

SR5 no doubt then. It would meet your needs 100%.

 

Got it, yeah the model up will suit your needs.

 

My SR5 V6 4X4 is all I need really. The only thing you're missing out on that you can't upgrade to later is the crawl control and the rear diff lock. If that's important to you then you may want to shell out for an OR.

Personally I wouldn't go 4x2 as that would kind of defeat the purpose of a truck for me but it's all about your needs and wants.

 

I am on my second SR5. I don't need the extras on the OR or the price of the Pro and prefer to add my own upgrades as needed. I purchased a new 2004 SR5 and drove it 110,000 and traded for my 2017. I will likely keep this SR5 for at least 10-12 years. Less bells and whistles means less bells that break and need replacement in that 10-12 years. I wont be found on the Rubicon trail, but will go off the pavement frequently when taking out my dirt bike.

 

Love mine. It will do everything you need very well.

The mechanicals are essentially the same for all trim levels. The TRD models have different suspension components and the OR/Pro models have a rear locker. But essentially they are all the same truck.
I recommend you get the trim level you think is best suited to your lifestyle.

 

I had to settle for a SR5 this time around, as my previous two 2nd gen Tacos were OR’s. This truck has been A LOT of fun and the 4x4 traction control will not disappoint.

 

For what it's worth, I absolutely love my SR5! Do I wish I had all the fancy features and gimmicks? Of course, but the SR5 is plenty for what I need. Most of the things I want upgrade for my truck would replace OEM parts anyway. There's also something fantastic about a turn key too instead of push button IMO. I can start the car without having to get in and push the brakes, and my passengers can do it from their side as well.

Then again, in the long run though what's a couple thousand dollars spread out over the lifetime of the vehicle?

 

I'm getting interested in offroading, and if I were to do it again, I'd go OR with no extras but Tow Package.

SR5 should be fine as long as you don't change your mind. I really like my SR5 otherwise.

Get the Tow Package even if you don't tow.

 

What keeps you from going off road in the SR5? The Atrac works really well. You can go on a lot of trails with just that. If you feel the need to get locked, there are options. The best is ARB in my opinion. ARB F/R trumps an OR.

If I were you, though, I’d get some Maxtrax, some recovery gear and head out.
