FSM calls for 75w for the xfer. CAn't find it, except the Toyota stuff. Is it ok to use 75/90, 75/85, or the Lucas 85/140 I'm putting in my diffs?

Sorry - I still don't understand viscosity designations fully...

Amazon. About $15.00. Synthetic. Toyota specified. You, Toyota and your transfer case won’t be able to tell the difference. The bottle says “ For manual transmissions. Practically proven and tested in aggregates with full specifications”, “Toyota #08885-81001” is listed.3560AD21-F502-4C30-A00B-AB4DA101E881.jpg
I too used Mobil 1 75/90 in my differentials.
On sale at Amazon for $8.79 right now if you need it.

I don't know...seems Toyota has quite a different additive package.

CB087244-4F24-405F-BA46-1326C1A62B98.jpg As the report says, both oils are serviceable, but it also says that the Ravenol should do nicely in its intended application.

As our Tacoma manuals state, “Use Toyota approved, ‘Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear oil LF’ or an equivalent of matching quality to satisfy the above specification.
It says the same for the differential oil, engine coolant and manual transmission gear oil.

For our transmission fluid, it says to only use “Toyota Genuine ATF WS” because using other fluid could cause deterioration in shift quality.....

There are other fluids recommended by their respective companies that meet the Toyota ATF WS standard.
Toyota doesn’t make their own transmission fluid, it’s manufactured by another company to meet Toyota specs. Or, a fluid meets Toyota specs and Toyota recommends it to use in our vehicle.

The use of Dexron II or III for our power steering fluid is an example of that.

Two different but equivalent oils from two different companies will usually have different additives. Or, one could say that those oils will never have the exact same additives. And, the different elements contained in the oils will exist in differing trace amounts.

As many people on TW have stated, you’re covered by the “Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act” a United States federal law enacted in 1975.

The Ravenol meets Toyota specs for 75W gear oil, just like Mobil 1 engine oil meets the specs for our Tacoma engine oil and Valvoline transmission fluid meets the specs for our Tacoma transmissions.

The Valvoline transmission fluid is synthetic per its data sheet, containing no petroleum, and it’s just my opinion that’s it’s probably better than Toyota ATF WS.

Toyota choosing and using ATF WS is an interesting discussion involving big companies, products and politics.

Just like some of the food we eat, chemicals, fluids and oils have trace amounts of elements and additives of varying quantities. Some wanted, and some unwanted or unfavorable for human consumption.

In the past (a few decades ago?) milk, orange juice and other human food stuffs were transported over the road in the same shipping vessels that were used to carry hazardous liquids. The vessels were just cleaned out prior to carrying the liquids for human consumption. But, how well were they cleaned?

There were traced amounts of various chemicals and elements in the liquids for humans.

I don’t know if that’s still going on today.

I suppose we could get some milk and orange juice tested and see what’s in it.:sandwich::sick:B63A8299-AF80-4D46-93EA-DAEA1B0BABF0.jpg

Royal Purple Synchromax is only one that is compatible according to my research. I contacted them directly. The issues seem to be some others have high phosphate levels which could cause deterioration of soft metals used in the transfer case Synchros. (Copper, brass). Or so I was told.

    If we're going by fluid manufacturer claims;
    -Ravenol MTF-3 75w
    -Bravoil FMT-3 75w
    -Morris Lubricant Lodexol MTFE 75w
    -EXN-MTF 75w

I think that perhaps you’d have to be a chemist or chemical engineer to have a better grasp on talking about the actual chemistry and elements in oil and their effects on bushings, seals and the internals of a transfer case!

I have no expertise in the area, but just find it interesting and like hearing other opinions regarding the subject of fluids and their use in machinery.

A couple of college classes in chemistry certainly does not make one a chemist!

Like some have suggested on Tacoma World. Years ago I read ‘Bob is The Oil Guy’, ‘The Motor Oil Bible’ and other articles like The New York Taxi Cab Study about taxis running different oils. Maybe that one was a bit flawed in that taxis are idling a lot, and not actually getting a lot of engine wear due to constant start up and shut off. I think they tested at 50,000 and 100,000 miles with oil changes at something like 3,000 and 6,000 miles and looked at metal loss in bearings. They found little or no differences between regular oil and synthetic.

I don’t know. I read that a long time ago.

I’ve used regular oil many times over the years, but now I’m using synthetic. If you buy it on sale and do the oil changes yourself, it’s not expensive.

Interesting reading, and good information out there.:pccoffee:

As listed above, there are several oils to choose from. All will probably do just fine in our vehicles.

I called 3 dealerships in my area and none carry the 75w GL-4 for the transfer case.

I did find that after 2014 Borg-Warner supplies all the transfer cases for Toyota which is the reason for 75w.

I will look into running an alternate 75w or will purchase Toyota’s transfer case unicorn blood online. I have two vehicles to service which can get pricey.

I went with Mobil 1 75w-90 in the differentials.

Will probably run Valvoline in the trans as it is Toyota WS equivalent.

    Edit:
Just to add fuel to the fire. When I went into the dealership in Hanover MA and asked for the LF for the transfer case, the parts guy looked at me like I was an idiot and told me they just use 90w gear oil they buy by the drum.
I have run the Synchromax for 30K miles. No complaints so far.

Interesting. One of the dealers also told me they use gear oil from drums for the transfer case. Wonder if it is 90w gear oil you mentioned.

I think I’m just going to go with the Toyota stuff for transfer case. It’s expensive for oil but it’s only 1.1 qts.

For the diffs I’m going to try Lucas 85/140.

I might try the following in my gmc D60, and if I like it, will consider using on the Tacoma differentials, transfer case, and mt:

    https://products.liqui-moly.us/mos2-antifriction-for-gears-1.html

There’s also this engine oil that I’ve been researching which, I think, but haven’t confirmed, contains nano particles of WS2 (tungsten disulfide). I learned about WS2 on another thread here on TW, but the thread was all but dead. Heck, it might have been mostly trolls there but after researching the topic I became pretty intrigued, and finally found this:

    http://performanceracingoils.com/xf-longlife-0w20-5-liter-jug/

Also very interested in WS2 in diffs, transfer, and trans. I ordered a small bottle of it to check out.

    Anyway. FWIW.

The anti-friction tube says it reduces gear whine and noise. That would be a plus for Tacoma rear differentials! I should pick some up.

And then perhaps get some new cab mounts per a Toyota TSB regarding rear differential noise!

Do you have the TSB #? Last I read the whine was something to do with harmonics in the leaf springs...

Just realized 1.1 qts is roughly 1 liter - thanks!

Not to the extreme of sending your oil off for an analysis or arguing over whether Mobil 1 is better than Quaker State. There are a lot of other things that could use attention than splitting hairs over motor oil. Just sayin...
