Ok first let me say this is only my opinion for what that is worth. I've heard some say that you reduce the sensitivity of a radar dectector if you hide it behind the sunscreen. After testing several locations I have found that there is no substancial reduction of sensitivity by doing so. It also makes it easier to run your power to the curtousy lights and hide the detector from on coming "Bad Guys".

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Why don't you just drive the speed limit?

Depending on what brand detector you have, they make blend mounts for the rearview mirror.

The best location is center of the windshield a tad higher than the rear window to pick up front and back. The popo's usually go for the front center of the vehicle in the grill so the closer to that the better.

Yup thats where i have mine mounted as well. Hardwire mounted. The best part about putting it behind the tint screen is you can't see it when looking from outside the truck.

Mine is mounted to the windshield just below my rearview mirror. I have it hardwired to the 12V Accessory wire behind my headunit.

Like someone above said. its best to mount it high enough to pick up both front and rear. Plus the higher it is..the quicker (albeit very minimal) its going to pickup signal when you crest a hill.

You get yelled at, flicked off, and run over by the 90% of the population who drives 5-10 mph over the posted speed limit such as myself :D

The best place is here using the headliner, a 6 dollar visor clip, and a 20 cent piece of velcro. Hardwire or go home. 5% tint and dots on windshield do not hamper reception.

My Bell has fully paid for itself many times over, placement is top center of the dash...Long live the Radar Detector :p

I pull it down when not in the truck. I've lost too many in the past hardwired by the mirror or visor from fricken thieves.

You know those little dots are actually metal flakes, and they DO hamper reception...

Since the whole world is now filled with radar waves like automatic door openers in stores, vehicle distance systems, "leaky" signals from other detectors, etc. I just don't think radar detectors do a good job anymore. I've owned about every model from cheap to expensive and they report so many false signals that it's irritating. With the instant-on devices that police are using now, all the detector does is tell you that you just got caught doing 90 over the top of that hill.

Since I've stopped using a radar detector I don't get tickets anymore. Common sense is much better then relying on a tool. Remember that if you and a buddy are being chased by a bear all you have to do is outrun your buddy. The same applies to speed. Make sure you are going slower then the fastest driver. Down hill grades are famous for hidden police.

I'm not a super fast driver anyway and here in Utah we have pretty reasonable speed limits. We even have a section of I-15 between Filmore and Nephi posted at 80 mph.

On the other hand I do feel that some speed limits are set to boost revenue. I just got back from a trip driving through Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. The ridiculous slow limits there drove me nuts. 55 mph on open, modern, 3 lane freeways is nothing more then revenue and there were lots of police giving tickets.

So that I didn't totally hijack this thread, you receive a better signal when the detector is high up on the windshield. The metal of the hood reflects the waves away from the detector when mounted on the dash.

You should go visit where my parents live in FL. They live on Fleming Island south of Jacksonville.

There is a 4 lane road going through their large development with all the subdivisions, retail shops, etc branching off of it and the speed limit is 25mph! 25 on a 4 lane. IMO opinion 40mph would be suitable. The speed limits in the subdivisions are 15mph. My mom (who never speeds) got her first ticket EVER in 38 years of driving on their street about 300 yards from their house doing 26mph in a 15mph. The Clay county sheriff runs laser in their subdivision just about every day. Thats some ridiculousness right there.

I like to use mine as another tool to detect police presence. Many people completely rely on it and they are the ones who get tickets. In addition to the radar detector I also watch the traffic ahead and try not to speed when I crest hills, basically just pay attention to my surroundings. Plus I typically drive 10mph over on regular roads and 10-15mph over on the insterstate so I can usually slow down if mine goes off.

wrong. you have it backwards. and where i live it's 95% radar.

mines 100% invisable from any angle or light conditions

apparently not. i have two tacomas, two identical radars. one mounted behind 20% tint and no flakes, the other mounted behind 5% tint with flakes. no noticable difference whatsoever.

theres alot of radar theories out there. much of it is bs. the radar detector is a poweful tool if you know how to mount/use it correctly.

got mine mounted on the visor with a visor clip and wired down through the side pillar and hardwired into the fuse box. works great, no issues.
