I must concur. 20-25 seems reasonable. Also, should be the same requirement before putting items up for sale. Just a thought.

I've got an idea: why don't those of you who have trouble tolerating somebody asking a question that's been asked and answered already calm yourselves down.

Post the link for them, breathe, make a little shit out of them, whatever you like. It's part of the deal, unless you want to have the mods create you a 1000+ post 'members only' area where you can revel in your online community of holier-than-thou-ers.

If a noob posts something without investigating first, it could be for a few reasons: they're stupid, in a hurry, or they've made a mistake. It's healthier for all of us if you assume the latter. We appreciate your help, and it's only fair that you say "hey dumbass, do a search." In the meantime, here's a link to what your looking for." Hell, you could leave out the second part if you like.

If I was one of the veterans on here who had shitloads of posts, that would be the fun and only reason for me logging in. Either helping somebody new who needs it, or giving somebody a gentle reminder to pull their head out of their ass.

And let's be honest - flaming newbies really gets some of the knobs off on this site.

If you're worried about empty, count-boosting posts, you could institute a small rep requirement instead.

we've been discussing a min post requirement for b/s/t threads...tired of people joining, posting something for sale, then never returning.

the noob thread issue is more complicated but we're looking at all options on that too, including the suggestions you guys are making in here.

Give it a rest, requirements and tests?

This is the internet, everyone gets a voice, a vote, good or bad

You need to be able to filter the BS, ignore the bad and absorbe the good.

Help the newbies or ignore the newbies but dont regulate

TTORA has a rule that you cant post pictures until you have posted without pictures, so I "Posted a post so I could post pictures"

    If you have a

number limit on new threads any newby can quickly get around the requirement by posting "bump" 20 -100 times. Then we respond with a Factory Service Manual test and so on:crapstorm:

    AND now continue

I agree with everyone else, with the same posts over and over again that could easily be answered by doing a simple site search. It gets old quick!

However I think creating post requirements before starting new threads will paint TW in a negative way.
I think all of these repeating posts come with the territory of a forum site.
But I'm up for other ideas, not that I have any influence on this site anyways. lol

I think a new member should be allowed to start 1 thread in the new member section just to introduce themselves. Its nice to see new members and their tacomas. Then after that the 25 minimum post regulation should take affect. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Ooooh, yeah, have them cite chapter and verse of the FSM! If they can download and find stuff in that, they deserve a freaking nobel prize...we should probably time them, too.

I have learned to just start ignoring crap, but it did take a while. Best oil, should I paint these black, hey why is everything posted in 2nd gen, what time is it...I'm using both hands but I still can't find my ass...

If you are feeling helpful, be helpful. If you are not, let the sound of crickets predominate.

One of the most insightful, ingenious posts I have seen on this site came from a guy with about 7 posts who is never logged on...homemade bronze bushing to resolve clutch pedal squeak. I doubt he would have jumped through 98 hoops to share his brilliant idea with a bunch of dorks arguing about Heidi what's her face's cosmetic surgery...

I think part of what happens is they are searching the net for information on what they need at the time. They stumble across TW, try the search feature a couple of times and say screw it, and they make there first post. Unless you are familiar with how forums work you may not notice the topic bar, you post where Google dropped you off. :notsure:

I don't think 25 posts is so many that they'll be locked out of creating new threads too long.

I think that the two sections that should be exempt from this 25 (or whatever) post rule are the Noob section, obviously, and the Buy/Sell/Trade section. Sometimes new folks have cool stuff I want to buy.

Seriously, I had to ask myself this question after reading this thread.

What is a bigger waste of time?

    1. Reading 38 posts debating the proposal of a minimum number of posts before a noobie can post.

    or

    2. What is the largest size tire I can fit under my truck without a lift?

How about we just discuss Tacomas and help people with honest questions?

I'm thinking along the same lines. Below a certain number a of posts this popup could come up or another popup which would show search results based on the "subject line" of the proposed post. Basically it would take two steps to make a post if you are new to the forum...Of course, I'm new so what do I know....?

I used to post stuff up on yahoo answers, and when you would type a question in, it would have a list of about 5 to 10 similar questions that had already been asked below it. That was always a great tool to have and use.
