The other day I bought a device for checking the tongue weight at the ball. I know I have my enclosed race trailer setup light so I have never really worried about tongue weight due to keeping a rearward weight bias. Since its winter I have a few things stored in there and know things aren’t weighted as I would when I tow. So I go to test my new scale and surprise I am right at the max tongue weight. I was still surprised to find a much heavier tongue than I would have guessed. I strongly suggest everyone get a REAL weight on their tongue. You too may be surprised at what your tongue weight really is.

I will be verifying in the spring when I have it loaded and setup in as towed condition. My intention to buy a weight distribution hitch is now much more important to actually buy and install.

Do you have a link to the device you bought?

Wow, that is a simple setup at a good price. Will have to look here or have my mother in law pick on up around Toronto. Thanks

Mine is a very simple long die spring so I can’t verify the accuracy at the moment. I assume yours will be much more accurate. At the price if I can verify the accuracy to a rough ballpark the tool is useful.

Yeah, I just wanted a good one that would be accurate, and have a range that would work for multiple trucks and trailers. That one fit the bill so I pulled the trigger.

Remember, a WD hitch adds another 80lbs or so to the tongue.

It does and needs to be considered. The Anderson weighs just under 60#. Pretty light for a WDH.

I just go and pay $3 to get weighed at the truck scales down the road. Actually it's $6 to calculate your tongue weight, and another $3 if you want to know what your loaded trailer weight is. But you really only need to do it once.

Anyone know any good scales in San Diego to check axle weights?

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
A couple days ago I used my bathroom digital scale. I cranked up tongue with jack, stood a 4x4 on scale under tongue ball mount, cranked jack to lift jack wheel off the ground. Three times, 177.8 lbs. took all of maybe 7 minutes in the garage.

I took my boat to the local weigh scales and dropped the tongue on the scales, worked great and free too!

That's great for a lighter trailer but I don't think a bathroom scale will work with a +600lb tongue weight.

    I have a Gashole
Where does one find a truck scale? What would I do a search for locally?

Do you have any junk or scrap yards ? They would have truck scales. Maybe a farm that deals with bulk grain. Large trucking companies, I know that they weigh trucks coming into the yard and going out.
