So exactly what gear are you in when this happens that has not been established 4,3,2 or D? Second ting let it change gears take your foot off pedle so it can change gears. Are you lifted, what size tires do you have, how much weight in the bed?
I don't know you or your driving habits so don't get insulted by my questions, I drive an 09 without this issue.

Reminded me of a old joke when i was a kid. Guy returns a vehicle he just purchased, stating there is something wrong with it. First I put in in D for dig out, then I put it in R for race, I'm telling you there is something wrong with it.

Assuming the OP has a drivers license and it's not the first time he's driven or been a passenger in a vehicle it's hard for me imagining not having some idea of how a gear shift works. As kid growing up riding in my parents, grand parents vehicles etc I understood in principle how the gear shift worked, both stick and automatic even though I had never been behind the wheel.

Assuming he test drove the vehicle prior to purchase, isn't it likely someone was also in the vehicle with him, new or used vehicle? Wouldn't something seem off driving if the vehicle didn't shift out of second gear? If I was selling a vehicle and the driver
never took it out of second gear I can't imagine not saying something to the driver. Suggesting the use of other gears so he knows the transmission is working properly or some such thing. If the driver didn't know how to use other gears, and didn't at least ask. I would attempt to politely suggest they look at other vehicles, this isn't the proper vehicle for them, it's to large, some kind of excuse, not for selling it to them. Otherwise assuming the purchasing party knows where I live and having contact information, I could imagine receiving lots of complaints even with a flawless vehicle. Can't program the radio etc etc

Not intending to be insulting to the OP or anyone else. Just my personal experience, without any idea of the OP's experience or lack of experience in or around a vehicle.

Sounds to me as others suggested, a transmission problem, if so and it's just been purchased from a dealership, return to the dealership and have a chat with them. Was it purchased without a warranty? What is the length of time that has passed since it was purchased? A bit more information would be useful in offering suggestions as to what might be wrong or offering useful advice.

Freeway cruising at 5K RPM's is putting a lot of extra wear on the engine that's hopefully unnecessary.

Yup, this is what my wife did when she took mine home from the dealership. She called me from the interstate crying that it was doing 5 at 60 and had no power. "I swear I put it in 2wd... uuh hang on" I loled but I'm not sure how long she drove like that.
