Shift points for automatic trans

I have an '09 with a V6 auto trans. I would like to be able to stop the trans from automatically kicking down a gear or two when I put my foot into the gas pedal. Has anyone made their auto trans into more of a manual trans?

 

I'm not sure how to put this- but this is one of the sillier questions I've seen in a while. If you wanted more of a manual trans- Why not get a stick shift??

I don't know of an auto that doesn't drop a gear when you get into the pedal... Lighten that foot up and you won't have the issue any more??

 

true the manual sounds like a better fit for you. never heard of any way to keep an auto from downshifting when it wants to.

 

I'm sorry if this sounds silly. Here is my logic. The gear ratios of the auto are far better for me than the manual ratios are which is what prompted the decision to go with an automatic.

What I would really like is for the Tacoma to operate more like the SMG trans in my M3 where it can go into a manual mode or an automatic mode. In the manual mode, it doesn't shift without moving the level.

 

I see the confusion. I'm trying to keep the motor at the peak of the torque curve (approx 3k rpm). I'm not trying to over rev the engine to race it. I'm mostly interested in this while towing a race car & trailer.

 

Does that make more sense now that I've explained the reasoning behind my original question?

 

It makes sense, but if you are interested in keeping it in a certain rpm range
the manual transmission would of been a better option.

 

It makes a bit more sense...but fighting what the truck is trying to do is against my nature.

Last time I looked max torque was 4300rpm for on the 4.0, your gonna have to rev it a bit more.

I shift my auto manually if I don't want it upshifting every time I back off the gas or downshifting everytime I get back on the gas. My hand sits naturally on the shifter with my fore-arm on the arm rest. Just flick it back and forth between whichever gear you want......

i love driving stick, but can say im not really missing it either.

I do believe the truck thinks its smarter than me, and im afraid she may be right ??

 

HAve you tried dring in 4 rather than D? Might help out a little while towing. As for manual chaning of gears. I would think that cannot be good for the auto after a while. But I really have no knowledge on the subject just rambling thoughts.

 

Talk to the guys at IPT they may have a mod.

I was bummed out to find my friend's 07 Tundy has the sport shift option. I really think that would come in handy no matter what you are driving...sports car, mini van, semi truck, etc. The sport shift allows you to select that gear you want (or in the OPs case the RPM band) which is good for towing. We do have the option to select 2-4th gear manually, but I think it is smoother and more functional to do this in the sport shift. I know in the manual it tells us to select a lower gear while towing or driving up a hill if the transmission is 'searching' for gears, read: switching gears too often.

Just my $.02...exchange rate on my money may vary depending on the market!

Finally someone that really gets the intent of the original question!

I guess after all this exchange, nobody is familiar with any mods to alter the shifting. Thanks 2.7taco, I'll check into those guys to see if they can add anything. If so, I'll bring the info back here.
