I've got something I think you're gonna like, for fairly obvious reasons...

    Wait until you see it!

What's the oldest apparatus you've ever seen still in service, like in the last decade or so?

Did you put a backup camera in yours? I can't believe you got it with only 21K on the clock!

No I did not. I refuse to use a back up camera. That’s what mirrors are for.

    I got mine primarily because...

    1. I got hit by a drunk driver in October 2015, got court-ordered restitution money from the drunk driver, and decided to spend it on my truck, and...
    2. I live in a neighborhood full of little kids whose parents must have taught them that it was okay to ride behind a vehicle on their bike or scooter while it's backing up!

Remember I told you that story of how I ended up telling my Grandmother what "tea-bagging" is?

    Well, here's a story of Grammy's take-no-bullshit attitude!

This was at least a decade ago, possibly more. I'm thinking somewhere in the range of 2006-2008, as it was after my grandparents moved back to Pennsylvania (2006) but more than likely before we got the Tacoma (2009).

My Grandma had to return something to Walmart, and my cousin (the school psychologist with the white RAV4) went with her. The employee who handled the return was this black woman who my Grandma described as "fairly young." For no reason, the woman asked to see my Grandma's ID (I've returned a lot of stuff to various retail establishments over the years, purchased with cash and credit, and I've never once been carded). My Grandma asked the woman why she needed to see her ID (if this was in 2006, then my Grandma had probably just moved here and there's a good chance she still had a Florida driver's license and hadn't exchanged it for a Pennsylvania license yet), and the woman gave her the run-around about "store policy." I say again that I've NEVER been carded for returning stuff, regardless of how it was purchased and even if I wasn't the original purchaser!

A bit of a back-and-forth ensued, and things got kind of heated. Grammy refused to hand over her license and demanded to see the manager. The woman called the manager, who arrived promptly, and allowed Grammy to return the item without showing her driver's license!

I think this is possible proof that my disdain for showing my ID in certain situations is not necessarily a result of having Aspergers, but rather the result of inheriting certain personality traits from my grandmother...

Specifically, Grammy's take-no-bullshit attitude that goes far beyond not wanting to show photo ID in routine situations...

My dad has been driving for about 40 years, and has had one accident in that time that was his fault...

Maybe in Texas, kids are more mindful of vehicles when the reverse lights are on, or even when the vehicle is actually in motion and backing up!

In my area, kids (and some adults too, sadly) do not mind the reverse lights.

My dad drives a 2013 Honda Pilot Touring 4WD that came from the factory with a backup camera. One morning, he was backing out of the driveway and the coast was clear. A kid on a bike could see that my dad was backing up, but the little twat didn't care. This kid just whizzed behind my dad's Pilot and almost knocked on their ass by my dad's back bumper. My dad did not see this kid until they showed up on the camera screen, and luckily was able to hit the brakes in time...

Also, before I got the backup camera, the biggest problem I had was hitting stuff with the back bumper of my truck. The bumper sticks out quite a bit, and from the driver's seat looking back, everything below the top of the tailgate is invisible...

Also, let me tell you about the time that a neighbor's 2-year old wandered into my driveway to look at my Tacoma because he liked trucks. His grandma showed up almost immediately, but seriously, who lets a toddler get that far ahead of them?!?! I was downright flattered by this, and I even opened the door so he could look inside my truck, but imagine if junior had come toddling up the driveway while I was backing up...

Pre-backup camera, I never would have seen him unless the tailgate was down, and I could have backed right over him...

Basically, my backup camera is an insurance policy for irresponsible parents (and grandparents)...

I drove for about 6 years without a backup camera and did just fine, but I must say that it's a very nice thing to have...

That sucks. I guess I’m lucky there’s only two kids that live near me.

My disdain for showing ID in most situations goes all the way back to that incident almost five years ago where I got stopped by the police for taking pictures...

I've been pulled over a couple times, and both times the cop of course asked to see my license, registration, and proof of insurance. The keyword there is license, and when the operator of a motor vehicle gets pulled over by a law enforcement officer for committing a violation, they are required to show their license. It's expected! If I happened to be a passenger in a vehicle that got pulled over for speeding and had done nothing wrong myself, and the cop asked to see my ID, then I might get a bit pissed...

Getting stopped by police while walking around in public for doing something that isn't illegal, getting shaken down for "papers," and being interrogated for the better part of a half hour is a very upsetting experience, especially for someone with AS.

People with AS, like myself, tend to dwell on things. And it's weird, too...

I only frequent two bars in Doylestown (the one where I work and another place called Chambers). The bouncers at my bar are obviously my coworkers and don't card me when I show up to drink. The bouncers at Chambers all know me too and never card me. Every once in a while, Chambers will get a new bouncer who doesn't know me, or I'll go to a bar where nobody knows me. Showing ID to get into bars is just a fact of life and something that I don't have a problem with, plus if the LCB catches you not checking IDs you can get fined or potentially lose your liquor license!

At Wawa, it is just fucking obnoxious. I'm a regular customer, they know I'm 28, and yet they still card me when I buy cigarettes for my boss and coworkers. At another convenience store around the corner, they don't card me. At the grocery store, they don't card me either! What's the deal here? So, Wawa is just an annoyance, and to be fair I did not get carded the last time I went there on a smoke run for my boss...

In just about all the other cases however, it's an AS-induced habit of dwelling on the past, and getting asked for ID in seemingly mundane scenarios brings back what I see as a very unpleasant memory in my life...
