Anybody use a refillable 5 lb propane tank for camping, instead of the little 1 lb coleman throw away style cans? I'd like to get a 5 lb tank and mount to the inside of my RCI bed rack, but that size of tank is ridiculously expensive compared to the 20 lb size. Plus I need to find a mounting set up as well. Anyone with a somewhat inexpensive outlet for the 5 lb tank or mounting set up?

I've started refilling my smaller tanks off the 20 lb tank. Might need to look into that. Think i made a video, but process is simple. Will help with price in the long run.

I'm going on a 2 month road trip with my wife. I won't be carrying around the 20 lb tanks from my grill. I really don't want to be buying multiple 1 lb bottles.

I'll may look into 1 lb refillables. Maybe I can fill off my friends and families propane as we travel around.

Change fuel use. I do not use propane, I use liquid fuel. Coleman Fuel or kerosene.
That is just me. I use propane to roast my coffee at home though.

Alcohol is a really efficient fuel when used properly.
A Trangia alcohol set up is easy to use, wind resistant, fuel available everywhere, and quick to set up. Pots, frypan, kettle.
Yes, you can really cook well with this setup.
Use the propane sometimes, and use the Trangia other times.
Buy a quart of denatured or Green denatured. Yellow HEET works, too. (I would not use yellow heet indoors. That may be just me)
I like the Trangia 25 size because the kettle is bigger, but you might only want a 27 size for the 2 of you.

    Swedish site here http://trangia.se/en/
    US dist Liberty Mountain http://www.libertymountain.com/
Available many places in the USA so you can see them before you buy.
    Available on Amazon.

I was out early for the Presidents Day Weekend on the Olympic Peninsula. A couple days by myself and a couple days with friends.

With a lot of campgrounds still closed for winter, I found a small track off of an FS road for the night:

Thankfully, for the second night Ocean City State Park was open:

Then, a couple nights of winds and heavy rain with friends at Cape Disappointment:
    IMG_20180217_165149.jpg

I saw just about all kinds of weather and no other folks for most of it:

    I ran across these recently:
    https://www.amazon.com/DozyAnt-Regulator-Propane-Adapter-Cylinder/dp/B00VVNGW5C/

You might not get a full fill, but it is better than tossing them after one use.

My 1-gallon / 4.25-pound tank (mounted in attached photo) lasts me five to seven days if I'm solo, including a few hours of Little Red Campfire use for those chilly evenings (during fire-ban season). I always bring along a 1-pound tank for a reserve if needed.

Gooseberry Mesa, Just outside Zion NP. The weather was beautiful, but it had snowed a few days earlier, so all the bike shops were diverting people to other trails. Little did they know...

We saw 2 other people all weekend.

Come to Utah sometime, and I'll give you the nickel MTB tour

As someone else pointed out there is an area on 180 as you head to Cedar Grove and Roads End where you can camp along the river, but be prepared for lots of river sounds.

Also there is Jenny Lakes wilderness that sits between the two parks. You access it via Big Meadows. However it is almost certainly gated off till the melt.

Last camping trip of the year for me and the kids. Great weather except for about 2 hours of rain on the last night @Highland Hammocks State Park.
