I’m stock at this point which will make a huge difference with the reduced weight both in truck and tires

My truck is a pig I’m probably close to 8-900lbs over stock weight when I am just kitted out for daily driving. Tack another 5-700lbs on that for when I am heading out to parts unknown and it will get pretty sluggish.

I also told you guys I’d give a report on towing with 1.03b today.

Towed my 16’ car hauler (1287lbs) to go pick up some steel today I also took a load of scrap to the recycling yard. Load to the scrap yard was 1145 scrap+1287 trailer = 2432 lbs for 46 miles. Return load back to the house was 1915 lbs of 3/16 steel plate five 5’x10’ sheets + 1287 trailer = 3202 lbs.

Fuel mileage on the first leg of trip into a slight head/cross wind was 13.4 according to the truck.

Fuel mileage on the return trip was 14.1 according to the truck had a cross wind on the return.

My mileage is up close to 2mpg over the stock tune from similar trips in the past to the same 2 locations.

The truck definitely benefits from this tune while towing. The low end improvements Matt made are heading in the right direction. If Matt could pull some more on the lower end of the rpm range he would have it nailed.

I do all of my towing at 65mph with the truck in 5th gear when cruising loaded. I’ll use 6th if I am empty. This trip I was loaded both ways like I typically try to do. Running to town empty doesn’t make me any money.

    Hope this helps y’all.

Ya, and this is why I stated that it's most likely a by product of the crap stock tune and will take time to re adjust.

stupid question, but i'm assuming i have to wait for the dongle before doing anything. Order was put in last week but i read that he was low on usb dongles. no hurry here but i wanted to make sure i wasn't holding up the process.

Thanks for reporting your experiences with towing - first I've seen w/ 1.03 thus far with this kind of load! Monitor transmission temps or anything with a scanner on your trip? I'm not a MT so will be a different story for us nasty A/T owners, but the biggest concern w/ towing tuned would be (for me) any excess heat created w/ the additional power/torque. Without load I'm seeing very good results so hopefully holds true with a few thousand LBs are hooked up! travel trailer season is upon us!

@bshammer0 - MT temps are not monitored by the ECU like they are in an AT.

Yeah, I wondered that as I was posting up my question but still didn't know if there was some sort of temp sensor on the MTs. Been a few years since I've driven a real truck - lol. When kiddo is older I'll be back assuming I can still get an MT by then and not some autonomous electric flying prius with no steering wheel by the time I dump the Taco...!

i would like to give an opinion or observation concerning Atkinson Otto transition and how there is a smoother transition reported by most.
is it possible that this transition is a result of more balanced power between the two,in witch case.is the Atkinson stage working to hard or are we missing something big from full Otto.i have noticed very little to no fuel consumption between the tunes.

Thanks for the towing review, do you think you'll copy this over to the poll/review thread?

    Cheers :)

Yeah I suppose us M/T guys could monitor oil and coolant temps while towing for comparison to unloaded.

Yeah I mean honestly for me, I don't get what everyone is saying about the pedal being too sensitive. I love it, and if anything wish it was even more sensitive. I think it's absolutely just reprogramming our brains from the old sluggish unresponsive pedal. Before 1.03, my wife's lexus, that has the same engine, felt to me like a hair-trigger pedal. There were a few times where I jerked forward quite a bit as a result of being used to my Tacoma. 1.03 gets me closer to the way the Lexus feels, but still not quite as hair-trigger sensitive. I think it's a good in-between compromise, since after all, it is a truck.

it might help to jump in another vehicle to see how stock tune screws with our foot

Fast is smooth and high cornering Gs is more effective at scaring passengers:)

Back on topic, I still have the stuttering so I am not sure how others don’t feel it. It would be cool to see a full Otto tune just to see how it changes the feel and possibly the 3krpm power spike.

Nope. I had a single chirp from the CAI before the 103b tune at around 3k rpms or so when hard on the gas. I now get a chirp, chirp, chirp at 2500rpms under mild acceleration and thats where the stutter is happening.

Leaving for a dirt bike trip 4 hours south to Southern Utah tomorrow. Hauling my bike down so I will have a good ride to test some weight in the bed and a good highway ride :)

I never flashed back to 1.03 after my surging issues. Ended up leaving the 87 tune and followed the procedure suggested by Mat and @MOC221_ (cold engine, 20 min idle). Note that I did NOT have surging at idle. I’ve noticed an immediate improvement. Previously the surging was getting bad even on my short commute, but this seems to have resolved it. I need to get it out on the highway to see if it officially did the trick.

Glad to hear. I did not experience any surging after flashing, but I did let it idle for 5 minutes after flashing, shut off the truck, then started it and drove 30 miles up to my dads.

I also have not experienced any surging/stuttering in the 2-3k rpm band while shifting through 2nd and 3rd.

I am still in love with this tune. Every time I shift into 2nd and 3rd, I get a smile knowing how well the truck feels compared to the stock garbage.
