Torque Converter installation

Hello,
I have a 2005 Tacoma prerunner V6 4.0 automatic transmission.

I have a couple of questions about reinstalling the torque converter and transmission.
The transmission is off the truck at this time.

1. Should I pre-fill the Torque converter with ATF fluid before installing?
2. Does anyone now how many times the Torque Converter will seat onto the transmission shaft while installing it? I have read that they are double seated as well as a others saying they are triple seated.
3. Are there any recommendations of lining up the mounts on the torque converter with the flywheel bolt holes? Should this be done before stabbing the transmission somehow or after the transmission is mounted? Any advice would be appreciated.

You need to bolt the torque converter to the flywheel before you put the transmission back on. Don't bother with prefilling it, it will just leak out and make a mess. Have a buddy turn the engine over with a ratchet while stabbing the transmission on. This helps

 

This doesn't sound right at all. Is Toyota somehow different than all other auto trans vehicles on the planet?

How does that not sound right?

 

1: Always prefill, not to the brim but make sure fluid is in the converter.
2:It double seats, but my rule is you cant get your fingers behind the converter once seated. It makes a pleasant thunk sound when done right.
3:Mount the transmission to the engine, during this process make sure you can spin the torque converter with your finger through the flex plate, you want a free rotating converter during installation. There is no index, just 6 bolts 6 holes.

I usually mount about 4 bolts of bell housing then process to torque the converter to the flex plate. Blue locktite on the torque converter bolts.

 

You never bolt the torque converter to the flex plate prior to the transmission installation.

No you're wrong, last thing anyone here needs is a torque converter that doesn't line up concentrically with the transmission input. Or to screw over their input seal or fluid pump. TC on trans, trans on engine, bolt TC to flexplate. End of story, tip your waitress

 

I cant tell if your trolling but this can affect the way a member could install an item.

I've swapped more torque converters than most of y'all have ever seen. Trust me, it works. How the hell do you get the bolts started with the transmission on? You're making a recipe for a stripped converter. Before y'all try to give advice, make sure you own a toolbox.

 

I've installed plenty of transmissions and torque converters and the inspection plate is there so you can thread and torque your bolts. Probably should work on how you start bolts if this is tough for you, toolbox or not.

 

You have obviously never worked on a g35. Holster your internet dicks people. There is more than one way to cook an omelet

 

You obviously didnt know what you were doing on that G35, hope they didnt pay you.

1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Install the torque converter clutch onto the automatic transmission.

(b) Using calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension A, between the transmission and the end surface of the drive plate, as shown in the illustration.

Standard:

A: 22.28 mm (0.8772 in.)


(c) Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A measured in (b).

Standard:

23.28 mm (0.9165 in.) or more


3. INSTALL REAR NO.1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

(a) Install the engine mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.

Torque:

65 N·m {663 kgf·cm, 48ft·lbf}

4. INSTALL NO.1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET

(a) Install the transmission control cable bracket No. 1 with the 2 bolts.

Torque:

28 N·m {286 kgf·cm, 21ft·lbf}

5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

(a) Install the automatic transmission with the 7 bolts.

Torque:

71 N·m {724 kgf·cm, 52ft·lbf} for bolt A

37 N·m {377 kgf·cm, 27ft·lbf} for bolt B

(b) Install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

 

I've had the displeasure of doing headers on one I know it's tight. Yes the way you're suggesting can work, but it can easily take out a transmission if you don't fully sink the TC on the fluid pump drive or if it is misalinged. It's poor form and definitely shouldn't be suggested to a newbie. That's why literally no one else will suggest this way, so many ways to fail expensively and only a minor time save.

Plus an auto g35 is a neutered g35 haha

 

Maybe delete his posts too. The FSM exists for a reason and should be the guide to these type of things

 

Transmission is installed with the converter
If you bolt up the converter to the flywheel first , your asking for trouble in this situation .
There are 3 different splines on the converter you have to match up not to mention the transmission pump .
There are a few Tacoma owners on this forum who , unfortunately learned the hard way
1- Stator splines
2- input shaft
3 - converter pilot
4 - transmission pump

In all the years I have worked with transmissions , I dont think I have ever attempted installing the converter first .
I think you could get away with it on the old Ford FMX transmissions but nevertheless , its not a chance I would be willing to take
