2wd Prerunner at the boat ramp?

Hello, My boat weighs in at around 5000 lbs but I'd like to buy a Tacoma Prerunner if possible (I really have no other need for 4wd).

Does anyone know if the Prerunner TRD & Tow Package (I'd get a year with that has a rear locker) can pull a 23' 5000 lb boat out of an average ramp?

I'd go for the 4x4. I pull my boat and launch it in some pretty crazy spots with my 4x2 but I have trouble with clay. I've had to use a pull from abuddy at one unpaved ramp that is a mixture of clay and marl and sand. Other sand ramps without the slick clay have not been a problem for me. The LSD works well but if both back tires are slipping you go nowhere.

 

What's a average ramp? Around here they vary quite a bit. Wet,slimy,steep, drop off?
4x4 if you want to be safe.

 

5000 lb 23 foot boat? sounds like our regulator. Well I know from experience that our suburban struggles pullin that boat around, and its a v8. If i were you I would go for the tundra

hey, i have a 89 toyota 4x4 with a 22re 4cyl. and a 1730 center console boat that weighs 3500lbs.and i never had 2 lock the front hubs in .but i put it in 4low 2 make it easier 2 pull my boat out of the water .

The 5000 lb figure is a conservative one taking into consideration: Boat=3025 lbs, Trailer=1000 lbs, Fuel/Gear/People=1000 lbs.

My closest ramps are all paved, normal incline, and sometimes have algae slick.

I don't want a tundra (I'm trying to downsize from my Chevy 1500 4x4) cuz I'm only pulling 5 miles or so.

I don't want a 4x4 Taco cuz I don't want those 17" wheels or the hood scoop.

I know! I'm being high maintenance here, but if I can get away with with a prerunner, I'd be pretty happy about that!

If any locals with a V6 Taco Prerunner wanna meet up and try the launch ramp with my boat attached, I'd be happy to buy lunch or trade for a case of beer or sumthin' !

 

the pre-runner has enough power for a 23' boat tow, but just watch out for slippery ramps...

 

You can get the 4x4 without the scoop and the 17in wheels im pretty sure....chris correct me

 

A 4x4 Taco won't necessarily have the hood scoop - that's the Sport Package. The Off Road Package comes with the locker and no hood scoop.

I kinda don't like how Toyota packages their Tacomas. If you want this, you gotta get that over there. I wish they would offer a TRD Long Bed with the off road pack.........

 

I tow my 21' boat just fine with my V6 prerunner. Sometimes you just need a fat guy in the bed to get up the ramp. You should be fine but sometimes it would be nice to have 4x4

 

Sounds like it's kinda a 'tweener.......and I need to bone up and get the 4wd. Ugh!

 

My buddy towed his 18 ft Key West up a slimy ramp with a 4 cyl Prerunner (with the locker) many times and never spun a tire. He had Michelin LTX on it. Like others have stated, a paved ramp shouldn't be a problem. Dirt= another story.

 

Yea I think the dunlops are my problem. Looking at getting better tires in my near future

 

i have a prerunner as well and i pull my 19' boat bass boat with no prob, there is a slight weight diff, but never have had a prob with it
