I was driving a rental Corolla with a CVT a few weeks ago, and I understand this completely. Coming from a manual transmission, it was very odd to not have the engine sound match my acceleration.

I bet they will have to come up with a 2 stage CVT in order to handle more torque .

A proper hybrid truck would have tons of torque. Yea I'd buy that. However cvt+4wd, no, no and no. CVT+torque=break, no bueno.

Except that they are blessing everyone with extended warentys to 100k. We must be hard on our cars, but we toasted a forester CVT in just 32k. Aside from it not lasting, it drove awesome!

Yeah, I'm out on CVT's. My wife's '09 Murano had the transmission die in the middle of a busy intersection without warning at 83k on the ODO. It also has a horrible whine in colder temps. Maybe these issues are isolated to Nissan, but I doubt it.

They are nice in Subaru's. They initially only had the CVT available with the 2.5L, but now it's standard on the 3.6L as well. They must have made some good improvements.

If y'all haven't, you should look up the CVT "belt" it's a trip.

That is what I like about my cvt in my Honda CR-V. Love driving again! Up and down hills with the cruise control set, WONDERFUL! Even drives into a head wind with no problems. Would of loved to had a cvt in the 4 banger Toyota I traded off.

Agreed, my GF has a crosstrek and that thing sips gas humming though the CO rockies at 10,000 feet and 75 mph. Drives great up the long hills to near vail pass and the eisenhour tunnel

Yeah, I was always afraid of CVTs after watching friends having to replace transmissions in hondas from 15 years ago, but have driven a couple of friends Subaru's and - if they hold up to the test of time - I must say they've come a very long way. I still like the feel of a mechanical gear set overall but when/if the day comes we're forced into CVTs they will be solid options

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
This will happen when power companies hace a charging post behind every 5th tree out in the countryside. I am heading out today to cut and haul a load of green firewood. No charging station where I am going out in the woods!

Our turbo subaru has decent torque (258ft-lb) and has the CVT. While it is probably a better option than a 20 speed slushbox, it makes the thing pretty boring to drive even though it is a bit of a rocket ship for a stock DD. The new direct injected turbo is a great motor with an excellent drive line muted by the transmission. My Wife loves it, but I'm happier in the right seat or in the Taco.

CVTs are the future for reduced complexity and MPGs. The AT buying public really won't care as long as they don't end up in the service department.

We will see hybrid trucks before CVT. That said, gimme a hybrid truck any day of the week. The torque would be perfect for off road and towing/hauling.

That was why I clicked on it. Was wondering why CVT Vs. Tepui?

You are right, but I personally see hybrids as a half-way solution, esp considering the weight and complexity of two drive systems and reduced space. They might be able to package it better in a truck, but. . .

If I had to choose, I'd say full on electric. The idea of heavy regenerative braking, essentially one pedal driving, gives me the idea that I will still have a good bit of control. Folks with that option in Teslas say that it is nice if not being able to three pedal it.

So, my hope is to keep the Taco until EVs get out of the beta cycles and a realistic offroader like the Bollinger become mainstream. I have a similar goal with motorcycles. When my current bike gives up the ghost, I'll grab a used VFR800 and hang on to it until electric bikes become cheaper. The top model Zero SR S has the range that I would want, minus something like the Supercharger system.

I want this too. I would likely be all over a hybrid Taco.

I mean, it's really a great idea for trucks. They could even develop a tonneau cover with a solar panel on it to help with charging while driving.

Not an apples to apples but my only experience with CVTs are in my polaris sportsman and it's a dog, power respond feels slow and mushy, to me, my dads 13 year old Honda rancher with gear transmission feels like it has twice the power and crisp throttle response. Idk I'm not sold on cvts and you need extra mechanisms to enable engine braking. Now a hybrid truck I can understand given you could achieve max torque at 0rpm which would be awesome for towing and offroad applications, plus superior gas mileage.
