So yesterday I pulled out a 2016 GMC Canyon SLE in loose sand. This was my first time ever pulling a stuck vehicle out. I was in 4LO and pulling in reverse. I was heavy on the gas and was at about 6-8 RPM... I realize now how stupid it was. Any recommendation on how I should pull others out in the future? Should I check my differentials, Transmission or any other components for damage?

    Thanks

Pull in the forward direction if possible. Your ring and pinion are weaker in reverse. Also some form of kinetic strap.

Tow straps, 2 tree savors, 3 shakles, a pully and a winch or come-a-long... on beach towing is the only way unless shovel and pcs of rug... and beer. Dont forget the beer.

You did you good deed for the day. Prop yerself up and do some elbow bends, courtesy of the Canyon owner... wait thats a big truck bro.. manual or automatic tranny?

Did it smell like burning paint or burning rubber?

What kind of strap were you using? That's the biggest thing. Most standard "tow straps" that you find in stores are static straps, meaning they don't stretch. You take out all slack and gently pull with those. In most off road scenarios, this is useless.

The solution to that is a kinetic recovery strap/snatch strap, one that stretches. It's essentially a giant rubber band that stretches and allows you to get a running start to yank them out, all while remaining smooth. Here's one that I use and recommend.

Here's a short 26 second video demonstrating the difference between the two.

    Didn't smell like anything burning.

I was using a static strap, all we had. Started pulling slow. Getting the tension out of the strap applying more and more gas.. got the job done but at some points I was at 6000, 7000 RPM.

The kinetic recovery strap is awesome. Truck has been running fine since so I think I'm in the clear. Ill make sure to pick one up.

Once you get it, make sure you have a proper point to connect it. I'm a huge fan of these, that go in the hitch.

If you frequent sand, some traction boards are a huge help as well!

I know you're not asking for all this recovery advice, but I figured it wouldn't hurt. I can shut up if you like.

Nah I appreciate the advice. I am new to off-roading so anything helps.

I used the front tow hook on the frame and it did just fine but I'm always looking for better.

Not really a fan of bungee tow straps- have to be really careful with them but they do work- just be careful what part you tie them to. I always let the other car’s owner put their own end on their car- while checking it too.

What do you mean really careful with them? You're a lot less likely to avoid damaging anything with them as opposed to a static strap.

EDIT: That gif you posted is using a static strap, and a prime example of why those should NOT be used with a running start.

Thats a static strap? Youre right, not supposed to get a running start with them for the jerking factor, but doesnt that one show the bumper getting pulled along as it recoils? My bad. Ive always pulled just nice n easy starting with the strap pulled tight- definitely not by jerking it.

It's hard to tell from the small GIF, but it appears that someone got a running start with a static strap, and that sudden and violent pull was too much for the stock bumper to handle on that jeep, so it just yanked off. I've seen plenty of videos on YouTube of idiots with static straps ripping bumpers off and breaking stuff, but have yet to see someone do the same with a kinetic strap. I'm sure it's possible, but just less likely. As you mentioned, proper recovery points on the vehicle are also crucial.

Edit: And static straps will stretch a tiny bit (enough to cause that recoil) but not enough to get the proper slingshot affect

I see you have a Sport.... Did you pull with the round attachment on the driver's side or the recovery point on the pass. side..??

I believe that one on the driver's side is for transport only and not a recovery point. The recovery point on the pass. side will mess up your air damn, if you still have one..... You said you used the "hook", so I'm not sure what you used. My TRD Sport does not have a "hook".

Just wondering if you added one and removed the air damn..
