id love 17's but I don't have the scratch at the time, of course the $$$ I had saved up we spent on stuff last weekend, and she hit something on the road today, busted a belt in one of the tires on the Runner.

there is a set of 3rd gen Tacoma wheels and tire for sale in Raleigh, which I'd love to have, just don't have the much available right now

I can replace the support bearing and u-joints but I'm not sure how to rebuild the double cardan and didn't want to attempt doing so by myself.

It's as simple as taking 2 U-joints apart to get it torn down. Then check the ball and socket easy to replace also pop out put new in. Inspect the H-bar in the center for excessive wear. There are a bunch of youtube videos on it I am sure.

I can't find part numbers for the double cardan u-joints or the ball & socket, or who to contact.

All I've found is that Toyota used 2 different sizes for the ball & socket & that Neapco is the only supplier available. The DC u-joints on my truck have outside clips but I don't know the size, part numbers, available suppliers, etc.

I'm trying to order the parts today so I can fix it this weekend. It's rapidly getting worse & I have a long roadtrip in a few weeks.

I sourced the joints thru a driveshaft shop, they worked but they were a few thousands smaller so the bear caps would rotate in the notes if the yokes. Wasn’t hard to do, but it is a process.

After several rebuilds from shops that for one reason or another couldn’t get it right I ended up going this way on my Runner

    https://www.wholesaleimportparts.com/Toyota_4Runner_Driveshaft_1997.php

Why it was so difficult/challenging to get a drive shaft straight I have no idea, but the shaft I got from the link above has been in for 2 years now, no problems at all

You’ll have to surf the site for your application

2days, order today, you’ll have it Friday

The clips should come with the u-joints. Call O'reilly's or something like that and see if they have them. Typically the U-joints in the double cardone are the same as the rest of the u-joints. A quick google search I found a moog part for the ball and socket flange that Advanced auto can get call your local store they could probably get it by fri. Also O-reilly carries all the U-joints as well as advanced auto and the u-joints do come with new clips. There are different options so you'll need to measure the cap diameter as well as the length of the 2 sets of legs. This is typical for all manufacturers to have several sizes of u-joints so making those measurements is critical.

Edit: Also if you don't want to muck with it at all Dorman makes one that is all ready completely rebuilt that orielly or whoever carries Dorman

I found several u-joint sizes as far as caps go most parts store and sadly mechanic shops just put what is in stock in and call it good and not actually measure to get the correct ones or inform you when you are purchasing. When I use to wrench we could pull 3 of the same trucks in and because of one little opt. change they changed the u-joint so annoying because sometimes it could take a day or so to source the correct u-joint. :facepalm:Chevy was notorious for this.

I like the idea of buying one already done Dorman also makes them apparently, might be nice to have one front and rear for spares.

We'll be going from a neighborhood right across from masonboro island, to one that looks like it's about a minute from the entrance to freeman park.

I think you guys are mistaken. Toyota says the double cardan is a non-repairable part and the entire driveshaft must be replaced if it goes bad. You cannot buy these parts at chain stores such as Advance Auto, O'Reilly's etc. There are no actual replacement parts made by Moog, Dorman, etc.

I finally found the thread I've been searching for & got some answers.

Neapco is the only known manufacturer who makes/sells the correct size ball & socket. Toyota used 2 different sizes & the only way to know which one you need is by removing & measuring your existing ball & socket.

Toyota used both inside & outside clip u-joints for the double cardan, depending on model year. For inside clip u-joints the correct size is offered by Rockford, Precision, Spicer & Matsuba. For outside clip u-joints the only known available is Rockford.

I joints for the Double Cardin are not a catalog item in most parts stores, Toyota doesn’t sell the joints or the ball, the only way you’re going to get them is they a specialty supplier or if you happen to have a very patient parts guy with knowledge. GM and Ford parts are different, they damn near fall from the trees.
I’ve battled the CV joint issue multiple times over he years with Toyota trucks in specific, metric make people wring their hands and make funny faces. It’s gotten a little better but a lot of places still get stuck on the metric part.

Dude do a little searching on your own I just did it over the internet and found all the U-joints. You don't necessarily need to replace the ball and socket part if it isn't worn out terribly but if it concerns you order a drive shaft that Blkvoodoo posted or I found dorman sells a reman which Advance and O'reilly carry.

Metric system+counter parts guy=mind blown and confusion

Even though pretty much everything in the automotive industry has completely switched to the metric system. The worst was the 80s with the American cars and their half metric half standard BS!
