Highway gas mileage sucks.

The door jam sticker on my stock TRD OR says I should be running 30psi in the Goodyears. That is what I have been running at. Should I increase psi on these tires to achieve better mpg?

 

Talking strictly R&D but I've been wrong before.

 

Was going to say this. The potential gain if properly tuned/built for E85 is fantastic.

 

Crash testing is R&D. I’m not talking about 3rd party crash testing results. Manufactures have to do testing to make sure products are safe and meet certain standard. Anytime you design or change safety features they need to be tested. A lot of research goes into vehicles today. Mainly because of liability. Plus everyone is lawsuit happy these days

with all this expensive R&D, it’s crazy the auto manufacturers make any money at all.... I work for a large industrial manufacturer that sells the “best equipment in its field” and have been there for 7 years. It’s crazy how far quality has gone downhill, and even more crazy is how easily people accept it. That’s the problem. People don’t expect things to last, they expect them to have issues right away and are still willing to pay almost whatever premium said company asks. Look how many people in this thread alone referenced something along the lines of “well we do drive trucks”... We drive 1/4 ton trucks with 6 cylinder engines that were “designed for efficiency”, yet get worse fuel mileage on average than almost everyone I know with a newer half ton Silverado or F150 and they have V8’s. An engine that was built for efficiency wouldn’t have such a rough idle that you feel it in the pedal with your foot on the brake, but when you ask the service techs they say it’s a characteristic of the engine. This winter there were days I got 11.5 to 12 mpg on the trip to work with my cruise set at 72 mph. Sure, it’s winter mix, and there’s a 10-15 minute warm up time...and I’m not driving it at 55 mph..and it’s got the aerodynamics of a slightly smoothed over brick but seriously? Lol. I commute 35ish miles to work, keep the cruise at 72 and sometimes it takes me 1/4 of a tank to a little over that to get to work and back. It’s not throwing any codes so the dealer says it’s fine.

 

Mine runs smooth but I agree with the mpg. My f150 got almost the same mileage. Twin turbo, weighed 700lbs more and drove a lot smoother. I averaged around 16.8 with my eco boost and with my taco I get around 17.5 but I baby the shit out of it. Mainly because I don’t want to look like an asshole passing everyone with the motor screaming. Reminds me of my Jeep I had. If I went off my average using my remote start on both, the f150 was a lot better. And I used it a hell of a lot more on the f150 then I do my taco

 

I’ve asked about that tune and most have said there is no bump in gas mileage?

 

upper management just pays lip service to quality today...ISO certifications are a joke....until the CEO or presidents of companies listen to quality professionals, nothings going to change.....salary and bonuses are structured around the old and stupid MBO (management by objective) system so nobody cares about quality or stopping nonconforming material from shipping.....they just want to make sure they meet their goals and objectives.....and usually it has nothing to do with continuous improvement projects.....and when product comes back, who do you think they blame....quality......

one has to understand that quality is a proportion...... a percentage.......number of returns divided by the number shipped.....reliability is quality over time.....using MTBF and MTTF...... and until that is realized, the USA will have less than acceptable products......like GM cars and trucks that are designed and built to last 2-4 years....shame on us and the unions

Why are you warming it up for 10-15 minutes? It's not good for it.

 

its good for me where im at its been less the 30 degrees in the am and id rather have a warm truck on my ride to work

 

old wives tale. You can idle one all day every day for hours and hours. No damage.
There was a thread recently about glass breaker tools and how often would/could you use it. A much more common "emergency" would be sitting in blizzard conditions on slick roads. There have been many times I have been stuck for hours on the interstate because of wrecks ahead. When wind chill is -20 do you think I turn off my vehicle? Um, no. Neither does anyone else. I crack my window, crank up the heat and relax. I was stranded for eight hours on the interstate once.
Idling or warming up does not hurt a modern vehicle. This happens all the time, much more than rolling your vehicle into water and needing a glass breakage tool.

FYI: You use 1/4 to 1/3 of a gallon of gas while idling. I used less than three gallons in eight hours.

 

not true the owners manual says if you idle for a long time you might burn some oil

 

The QC director for our company is retired Army. General. Perfect job for him.

 

Once it is warm, idling is fine. To warm up an engine by idling it is NOT the proper way to warm up an engine. An engine wears most when it is cold, and idling it while cold will wear it down faster. Once the oil and water temps have heated up you can idle it all year for all I care.

 

I'm sure you have supporting documentation from some testing?

 

Because it’s gets cold AF here and it takes that long for the needle to get into the warm area.

 

Oil consumption has been fine btw
