Can anyone provide details on what modifications need to be done to fit a 285 tire in the OE spare tire location underneath the bed? From my search all I've gathered is trimming and hammering but I'm looking for more specifics.

Also does the 3rd gen spare tire have a TPMS sensor? I'd like to start doing a 5 wheel rotation but I don't want to have to change sensors every 5000 miles

    Relocate the hoist 2" back.
Need to drill 4 new holes for that but the frame cross member is thin in that spot and it's far cleaner than cutting or banging on the horns

It doesn't. That's why there's a sticker on the wheel saying for temporary use only.

Edit but the stock spare also really doesn't play nice if you're using 285's.
I have a 285 in that location on a stock spare steely and if I were to get a flat in the front, I'd have to change two tires. One of my Rears to the front and the spare in the back. Stock steely with 285 doesn't clear the UCA. Need more backspacing.
I should probably just pony up and get a 5th method wheel

I understand, so If I wanted a true spare of the same size I'd have to get a comparable wheel as well. On top of that the spare doesn't play with TPMS system so It would be impossible to do a 5 wheel rotation without switching sensors every time I rotate my tires.

I thought they did away with the sensor in the spare, if so the car doesn't care where the sensor is .

Just buy another Sensor and throw it in?
I don't know if that works tho. I'm running all without TPMS by now. Don't need it

Cut your exhaust pipe to dump right after axle, convince the two tabs under the bed to move back about an inch each (hammer/crowbar), raise tire into stock location and guide it to its spot up against the hitch, check for clearance...easy.

The 3rd gens have a system in the center dash that displays current tire pressure of each wheel. It uses a TPMS sensor. My question is if the spare has that sensor. Ideally I want to do a 5 wheel rotation but I don't want to move my sensors around every time.

Spare still doesn't have a sensor.

Also that's really not practical to swap the sensor because it requires taking off the tire, then re-mounting, refilling and re-balancing

so the next question is if I can buy another sensor and have it programmed where it will automatically detect which corner of the vehicle the tire is on. Obviously this already done with 4 sensors but can it be done with 5 sensors?

...or get a sensor in the spare and whenever it’s rotated in, change which sensor to read in the computer. Nothing is ideal but this would be the easiest for a 5 tire rotation.

My truck (2011) had space for 5 sensors in the computer but the 5th is just a place holder as the computer only monitors the first 4.

Is that something that can be done at home or would I have to take it to a dealership every time?

I didn’t know the new 3rd gens automatically knew which tire was where...that’s cool if it does!

Can be done at home with an OBD II cable and laptop. @Sandman614 is smarter than I with this...

yessir don't ask me how it works but I can rotate my tires and when I check my center dash tire pressure screen, I can tell it has automatically detected that the wheel has moved.

I'm not sure how that works on that gen, @PvilleJohn is the resident turd genner.

Swapping tpms sensors around in the trucks computer is different between the gens?

Nah that part is just get the number off the sensor before install and punch it in the computer. The auto detect position is JFM.

    OME and worth every penny.
What is the advantage of a 5 wheel rotation. Seems you're just buying an extra tire each set?

get more use out of the tires plus if the day ever comes when you need a spare it's ideal that it is the same size as the rest rather than having 4 worn down tires and 1 brand new one that could be a significant size difference.
